French Toast Sticks

A fun way to serve up French toast and sausage.

Equipment

  • toothpicks

Ingredients
  

  • 2 large eggs
  • cup milk
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • 12 cooked breakfast sausage links
  • 12 slices bread
  • 1 tbsp butter, for frying
  • powdered sugar, to garnish
  • maple syrup, to serve

Instructions
 

  • Trim crust off each slice of bread.
  • Using a rolling pin, flatten each slice of bread.
  • Roll a sausage link into each slice of bread and secure with a toothpick.
  • In a shallow bowl, beat together eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla until well combined.
  • Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Dip each bread/sausage roll in the beaten egg mixture to just to coat. Do not allow roll to soak in egg mixture.
  • Fry each roll on all sides until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Remove toothpicks.
  • Serve with a dusting of powdered sugar and a side of maple syrup for dipping.

Notes

Note:  Rolls will be soggy if soaked in the egg mixture too long.  Dip each roll in egg mixture just long enough to coat them and fry immediately over medium heat for best results.
