If you love French toast you are going to love this fun way of serving up a traditional breakfast food in an untraditional way. Kids will gobble up these sausage stuffed French toast sticks. Not only are they delicious but they are easy enough to make that you can get them on the table in no time, even on a busy school morning.
For best results, you want to keep a couple things in mind. First be sure to use fully cooked sausages. The bread will cook up quickly and if you are using uncooked sausage, it will not have time to cook all the way through.
The second thing you want to be aware of is to not let the rolls sit in the egg mixture too long. If the bread absorbs too much of the egg mixture you will get a soggy roll. The first batch I made came out soggy and they were not very good. The second batch came out much better when I just coated the rolls quickly with the egg mixture and then grilled them right away.
This recipe uses the same ingredients you would use to make French toast in the traditional way. Bread, eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla. Plus sausage, can’t forget about the sausage.
Start by trimming the crust off each slice of bread.
Using a rolling pin, flatten each slice of bread.
Roll a sausage link into each slice of bread and secure with a toothpick.
In a shallow bowl, beat together eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla until well combined.
Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat. Dip each bread/sausage roll in the beaten egg mixture to coat.
Note: Rolls will be soggy if soaked in the egg mixture too long. Dip each roll in egg mixture just long enough to coat them with the egg batter and fry the rolls immediately over medium heat for best results.
Fry each roll on all sides until golden brown and cooked through.
To serve, remove toothpicks and top with a dusting of powdered sugar and a side of maple syrup for dipping.
We gobbled these right up, they were so good!!!
