Add A Touch Of Autumn To Your Decor With This Easy DIY

Are any of you old enough to remember crochet toilet paper covers? When I was a young girl my family travelled to Europe one summer. One thing I remember seeing that you don’t see here in the US, were toilet paper rolls covered in a crochet cover. In the back window of most cars on the autobahn, sat a roll of toilet paper poorly disguised under a crochet cover. Literally, almost every single car had one sitting in the back window.

Well I quickly realized why everyone drove around with toilet paper rolls in their cars. Every public bathroom had someone sitting at the entrance selling toilet paper, literally by the square, at an astronomical price. Quite ingenious actually. I mean, if you need a square, you need a square, right? What are you going to do? LOL!

Truth be told, I don’t do much seasonal decorating in our bathrooms. I will change out the towels and sometimes I will add a small seasonal touch as well. Most bathrooms are quite small so adding just a simple touch is all that’s needed to decorate it seasonally.

Instead of hiding extra rolls of toilet paper under the sink, use them as fall decor instead. Truth be told, when we had the worldwide toilet paper shortage due to the Corona Virus lockdowns and you couldn’t find toilet paper to save your life, when I could finally get my hands on some, I stocked up. Unfortunately I wasn’t paying close attention and ended up with single ply, UGH.

On the bright side, if we ever get desperate we’re covered! Plus they were perfect for this DIY!!! I used those single ply rolls, that nobody wants to use and turned them into these adorable fabric pumpkins.

Supplies:

  • Toilet paper rolls
  • 18″ X 18″ squares of fabric
  • Small branches or drift wood
  • Scissors
  • Gardening shears

TIP: I recommend using fabrics with smaller patterns. Once the fabric is gathered together you won’t be able to see the detail in larger patterns.

Cut fabric to size. A piece of fabric cut into an 18″ square will be just big enough to cover each roll of toilet paper. I purchased 1/2 a yard of each fabric and I was able to make two pumpkins from each 1/2 yard of fabric.

Don’t worry if they aren’t perfect squares.

Fabric stores often sell precut pieces of fabric. I was able to find the neutral plaid pieces that were precut to 18″ X 21″. No cutting required, it couldn’t get any easier than that!

Begin by unrolling several yards of the toilet paper.

Are you in the under or over camp?

Then loosely wrap the toilet paper back around the roll. The goal is to fluff up the roll and soften the edges a bit; a more pumpkiny shape. Is that even a word? LOL.

Place roll in the center of the square of fabric.

Grab one corner of the fabric and gather it together in your hand. Tuck fabric into the center of the toilet paper roll.

Continue with the remaining 3 corners of fabric; gathering the fabric together in your hand and pushing the ends into the center of the toilet paper roll.

Secure the fabric by pushing a twig into the center of the toilet paper roll.

That’s it! How simple was that? No sewing or gluing required. If you can find precut pieces of fabric in a pattern you like, you don’t even need to get out the scissors. After Thanksgiving you can easily deconstruct these pumpkins and use the toilet paper as needed.

I would say this is the frugal-ist, easy-ist to do DIY I’ve ever done. You can make a bushel of fabric pumpkins in under 5 minutes!
