Another spaghetti sauce recipe? I know, I know you most likely already have a favorite recipe that’s in your regular rotation, right? A go to sauce that you have been making for years. So why try this one?
- It is one of the quickest, easiest meat sauces you can make from scratch. No need to stand over the stove all day long for hours and hours babysitting and stirring a sauce as it simmers.
- It contains a secret ingredient that gives this sauce a complexity of flavor that you only expect to get from a sauce that slow simmers on the stovetop for hours and hours.
- It uses simple ingredients that you probably have in your cupboard all the time.
- Your family will love it!!! I mean, who doesn’t like a really good Spaghetti dinner?
This is a special recipe that is near and dear to my heart, and once you try it you are going to love it just as much as we do.
Growing up my dad made this meat sauce on a regular basis. It was one of his specialties and brings back so many memories of him. When I saw him peeling an onion I knew we would be enjoying this pasta meal for dinner. Now that he is gone, I love making it for my family. They love it just as much as my sister and I enjoyed it, growing up.
Alright, I know you are busy, so lets get this recipe going so you can sit down to a delicious Italian meal with your family.
Start by browning a pound of ground beef with a chopped onion. Drain off excess fat.
Read about my all time favorite kitchen hack for freezing ground beef that doesn’t require hours of time for thawing. This hack ensures you always have ground beef on hand when you need it.
Once the ground beef is browned and the onions are soft, add the minced garlic and cook until fragrant, about a minute.
Add the tomato sauce and tomato soup to the skillet and stir to combine.
Add the spices; Italian seasoning, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Stir to combine.
Add sliced mushrooms and stir to combine.
Next it’s time to add the secret ingredient; a 1/2 cup of brewed black coffee.
Adding the coffee to the sauce adds a complexity and underlying depth of flavor to the sauce. It helps to balance out the sweetness of the tomato-based sauce. It adds just a hint of bitter flavor that highlights the sweetness of the sautéed onion and tones down the acidity of the tomato sauce. The addition of coffee adds a lovely savory umami-ness to the sauce.
If you don’t have any brewed black coffee on hand; dissolve a heaping teaspoon of instant coffee in 1/2 cup of hot water.
While your pasta is cooking, allow the sauce to simmer for just a few minutes to heat through and thicken the sauce a bit.
TIP: If the sauce gets too thick, thin it by adding a little of the pasta water you used to cook your pasta.
Serve this hearty delicious sauce over your favorite cooked pasta and top it with a generous sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan cheese.
Garlic bread goes with Spaghetti like cheese goes with wine; like peanut butter goes with jelly. Slather this garlic butter on any type of bread you happen to have on hand for the best garlic bread you have ever eaten! It even makes old sneakers taste divine 😂
Round out the meal by adding a crisp green salad and wash it all down with a glass of your favorite red wine. Who says you can’t have a high quality, delicious, home cooked meal on a busy weeknight? Ditch the bland, tasteless sauces in a jar and make this one instead!
Time to dig in! I promise you will not be disappointed with this recipe. You will be surprised at how quickly it comes together and how utterly delicious it is!!!
