How To Make An All Natural Herbal Bug Repellant

Those pesky mosquitos can ruin an outdoor excursion faster than almost anything, well, except maybe a sudden downpour. You can clear out a campsite pretty darn fast if you’re being tormented by those annoying biting bugs. Who wants to spend an evening swatting bugs away? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to enjoy the great outdoors without those annoying critters ruining your fun? Rather than dousing yourself in toxic bug sprays that are loaded with nasty chemicals, try an easy herbal remedy instead.

Not only is this herbal remedy inexpensive and easy to make, it’s also non-toxic, and smells great too. There are several herbs you could use that have been shown to have mosquito repelling properties.

Herbs that have been shown to repel mosquitos:

  • Citronella
  • Lemon Balm
  • Lavendar
  • Peppermint
  • Catnip
  • Basil
  • Sage
  • Rosemary

Since I have a ton of Rosemary growing in my front yard (if you need some just let me know) I cut off a good sized hunk and tossed it in the trailer as we were leaving on our last camping trip.

Use whatever herbs you may have growing in your garden.

Rather than just lighting a fire and tossing handfuls of herbs into the flames, the technique I’m going to share with you ensures you get a much longer burn time. They will burn up pretty quickly if you toss them straight into the flames and you will need a lot of herbs to keep the scented smoke going and benefit from the it. Instead, take a few minutes and make these herbal bundles that will last quite a bit longer in the flames and produce scented smoke for a much longer period of time.

Supplies needed:

  • Bundle of herbs, i.e.; Rosemary, Citronella, Sage, Lavender, Peppermint, etc.
  • Aluminum foil
  • Toothpick or sharp knife

Start by laying down a good sized length of aluminum foil on a flat surface.

Place a bundle of herbs in the center.

Loosely roll up the foil to enclose the bundle of herbs and twist the ends closed.

Use a toothpick or the tip of a sharp knife to poke small holes all over the bundle of foil and then wet the packet.

TIP: If you have an ice chest with melted ice water in the bottom, just toss the foil bundles in there until you are ready to use them.

Build a roaring big campfire and toss a bundle into the fire. The foil will protect the herbs from burning up and the heat from the flames will cause the herbs to “smoke” releasing their scent over a longer period of time.

Make several bundles so you can just toss one in the fire if bugs are becoming a problem. I was pleasantly surprised by how well this easy herbal remedy worked, and we enjoyed the lovely fragrance it created as it “smoked” in the campfire pit.

Be sure to give this herbal bug repellant a try the next time you are sitting around a fire. It will help keep those pesky bugs at bay and the pleasant fragrance will be enjoyed by everyone sitting around the fire. Except the annoying bugs, they won’t be hanging around.
