Tried & True Easy Formula For Creating A Holiday Inspired Bed

The holidays are approaching and we are all busy putting up the Christmas tree and our favorite holiday decorations in the main living areas of our homes. Depending on your stash of holiday decor and your energy level, it can be an exhausting time of the year. The last room we want to think about is the bedroom.

Yes it’s easy to just close the door and forget about it, but I think that’s a big mistake! I’m not advocating the need to go over the top with decorating the space. I think dressing your bed is all that may be needed to bring that holiday cheer into a room of the house that is often neglected when it comes to the holidays.

Being cut off from spending time with those that we care most about has made me realize how important it is to create beautiful spaces in my home, for me. I’m so much happier when my surroundings are beautiful to look at, when my spaces are neat, tidy and organized. Creating spaces that are calming and bring a smile to my face makes being cut off from the world a little more bearable during these challenging times.

Who the heck has the time to decorate the bedroom on top of everything else? There are gifts to purchase, presents to wrap, cookies to bake, decorations to put up…I know it’s a lot. Take a deep breath, decorating the bedroom is as easy as changing the sheets on the bed, which is something you have to do anyways. So the next time you are changing the sheets, spend just a few extra minutes to deck out your bed for the holidays.

Let’s face it, when it comes to the bedroom, by far, the bed takes up the most visual space in the room. It just makes sense to dress up the bed for the holidays. Doing so gives you a ton of bang for your buck. Even if you don’t do anything else in the bedroom to decorate for the holidays, dressing up the bed for makes a huge visual impact. It will bring a big smile to your face every time you walk into the room.

So how does one do it? Where do you start? How do you get a designer looking bed when you don’t know where to begin? Relax, you’ve got this. Anyone can do this, I promise you it isn’t rocket science and you don’t need a degree as an interior designer to create a stunning bed!

Let’s start with the basics and lay out the foundation for creating a designer holiday bed.

1. Neutral Foundation

Start with the basics, sheets, pillowcases and blanket in a neutral color. I personally love white. It looks clean and crisp and fresh. White works with every other color under the sun, and makes making the bed a no brainer.

You really only need two sets of high quality sheets. When one set is on the bed, the other set is in the wash. You could go with an off white, bone, beige or even gray for the base, but stick to a neutral base that coordinates easily with other colors.

TIP: Skip cheaper synthetic sheet sets and invest in the highest quality natural fiber sheets you can afford. They will hold up better wash after wash, actually making them more affordable in the long run. They also feel good against your skin and they breathe, which will give you a much better nights sleep.

Be sure to tuck in the top sheet and blanket all along the edges for a neat, tidy, crisp base.

Fold down the top sheet over the blanket and then fold it again forming about a 10-12 inch folded edge along the top 1/4 of the bed. It’s a small detail that adds an extra layer and a little more interest than leaving the blanket and sheet flat. Small details like this make a big difference.

2. Pillow Placement

Start by placing the sleeping pillows along the top of the bed. When you put them on the bed, place the open end of the pillow cases facing the center of the bed.

No need to iron the pillowcases, we will being adding more pillows to the bed, so you won’t see the fronts of these pillows, only the sides

The finished edge will be what you see from the sides and creates a more polished finished look. Another small detail that makes a big difference in the overall look. This is most apparent if you see the side of your bed when you enter the room.

Next add a row of Euro sized pillows. Euro pillows are bigger than other pillows, they measure 26″ X 26″ and will hide the row of sleeping pillows behind them. Remember when I told you it isn’t necessary to iron those pillowcases? This is why you don’t need to waste time ironing them.

Adding a row of Euro pillows creates a nice backdrop for what’s to come.

Remember to stick to a neutral color for the most versatility.

TIP: Use three Euro sized pillows on a king size bed and two Euro sized pillows on a queen size bed.

See how neat the side looks just by placing the open ends of the pillowcases towards the center of the bed?

That completes the foundation! We now have the base in place. Every time you make the bed, start with this foundation to build upon. Are you with me so far? There’s nothing complicated, technical, or expensive about laying down the foundation of every bed in your home. See, I told you this was going to be easy. Now that we we have the foundation to build upon, it’s time to get to the fun part!

3. Add Color

I personally love adding pops of red when I decorate for the holidays. I’m a traditional kinda girl and red says Christmas to me and instantly adds a holiday vibe. But because we started with a neutral base you can incorporate whatever color you choose that works with your holiday decor. That’s the beauty of starting with a neutral base! The versatility!

The easiest most affordable way to change up the look of your bed is by switching out the duvet cover and adding matching pillowcases. Duvet cover sets typically include not only the duvet cover but the sets also come with matching pillowcases. It’s an extremely easy and affordable way to change up the look of your bed. You can achieve the same look using a comforter set and I would encourage you to use what you already have instead of going out and purchasing all new bedding. But when you are ready to change up the look of your bedding consider going with a duvet instead of a comforter.

Fold the duvet and place it along the foot of the bed. Not only does it add color to the bed but the loft from the duvet helps add some height at the foot of the bed. It balances the weight of the bed so that you don’t have all the visual weight at the top.

Look at the dramatic change to the look of the bed just with the addition of this plaid duvet set.

The beauty of using a duvet vs. a comforter set is the significantly lower cost. Plus a duvet set takes up so much less storage space in your linen closets. Duvet covers can easily be laundered and don’t require an extra large washing machine or dryer like a king size comforter set does.

This makes it super easy and extremely affordable to change up the look of your bed any time the whim strikes!

Toss a nubby throw onto the foot of the bed for some added interest and texture.

Add texture with pillows and throws.

How about adding a bed tray to make your bed really stunning? This one accessory will really give your bed a polished designer touch. It’s the perfect spot to add in fun accessories that you can easily change out with the seasons. Because it is such an unexpected touch, it will add some height and interest to the bed, and loads of drama.

You can easily make a bed tray and paint it to match your decor using scraps of lumber, turned legs, and drawer handles purchased from the hardware store.
