5 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Headboard

When you walk into your bedroom does it bring a smile to your face and invite you to relax or does it make you cringe and feel anxious? For a long time, our master bedroom was the last room in the house to receive any attention. It was easy to just close the door every day and forget about it.

I have a confession to make, when our kids were young, the master bedroom was a hot mess! It was a dumping ground for leftover mismatched furniture that didn’t work anywhere else in the house. The bed was rarely made and the comforter was a good 10 or more years old; it was worn, threadbare and matched nothing. There were boxes of clothes stacked in one corner. The ironing board sat out with clothes draped over it. There were always stacks of laundry on top of the dressers waiting to be put away. Dirty clothes piled in the laundry hamper. It felt like a chaotic mess, not a relaxing, inviting sanctuary. Does any of this sound like your bedroom?

When the kids got older, I had enough! I finally decided it was time to turn our bedroom into the relaxing, inviting sanctuary that it deserved to be. I know I am not the only one that has put off giving the master bedroom the attention it deserves. We spend so much energy decorating the nursery, the kids rooms, and making the public areas of our homes look beautiful, but we don’t seem to think we deserve the same attention when it comes to our bedroom. It really is one of the most important rooms in our homes.

The goal is to create a restful, inviting space.

The master bedroom should be a private sanctuary where we can relax and rejuvenate our spirits. It should be an inviting space that brings a smile to your face. When you walk into the room it should feel like all the stress and worries of the day just melt away. Not a space where you fall into bed after an exhausting day surrounded by dirty laundry and clutter. No wonder we wake up feeling just as tired as when we fell into bed the night before.

This is not conducive to a restful nights sleep.

The first thing to do is to clean out the space. Get rid of the boxes, put away the piles of laundry, the ironing board, anything that doesn’t belong in the bedroom has to go. Once you have cleared out the room take a good hard look at the furniture pieces you have. You really don’t need much furniture in the bedroom, the bed, a couple of nightstands and a dresser are the bare essentials.

Today I want to address the bed since it takes up such a large amount of real estate in the room. Even if the other furniture in the room isn’t what you ultimately want, if the bed looks fabulous, it will elevate the entire feel of the room.

Yes I have been converted from a non-bed maker to making the bed everyday. It makes me smile when I walk in the room and being greeted by a lovely, luxuriously made bed.

I’m a member of several Facebook home decor groups and so many people struggle with picking the perfect headboard. Are you struggling with finding the perfect headboard? Do you have one that you hate?

Here are the top 5 tips to keep in mind when you are choosing a headboard, so you get it right the first time.

1. Choose a tall headboard.

This is the most important element to keep in mind. Think of the headboard as the “frame” for the bed. You should be able to see it when the bed is made and it should “frame” the bedding. If you love lots of pillows on the bed like I do, you will want to get a taller headboard. Euro shams are 26″x26″ and when the bed is made pillows can completely hide a short headboard.

The bed just doesn’t look complete without a headboard.

How tall you want the headboard will also depend on the height of the ceilings in the room. The higher the ceilings the taller you can go with the headboard.

This headboard is a great height at 61 inches tall; just over 5 feet.
2. Keep it simple

A headboard is the backdrop for your bed, so it should compliment the bedding, not overpower it. I chose this headboard for it’s clean, simple lines. It has just a few embellishments to give it some interest without detracting from the bed. The dark finish makes a striking contrast with the lighter bedding. It compliments the entire look of the bed.

The side brackets and rope trim detail give this headboard it’s simple classic charm.
3. Choose a Neutral Color

Stick with a neutral color so it will work with whatever bedding you choose for the bed. Picking a bold bright color will limit your bedding choices.

I chose the espresso finish of the headboard to match the color of the bed frame for a pulled together cohesive look.

Take a look at the versatility of this neutral headboard. It provides a nice tall neutral “frame”. It’s so easy to change out the bedding for each season. Almost any bedding will work with it.

Being able to easily switch out the bedding to change up the look of the bed will prevent you from getting bored with the headboard you choose.

Save the bling for the bedding rather than the headboard. It’s so much easier to change out the sheets and bedding than it is to change out the headboard.

4. Selecting the Material

If you enjoy sitting up and reading in bed, or if you are lucky enough to enjoy breakfast in bed on a regular basis, then perhaps a padded fabric headboard would be the most comfortable option. Think about how you use your space and let that guide you in selecting the material that will work best for your needs.

We have an adjustable bed so a padded headboard wasn’t necessary. Instead I focused on finding a headboard in a dark espresso finish to match the existing base on the bed.

5. Go with a Timeless Style

No matter what headboard you ultimately choose, pick a classic style, something that won’t soon look dated. It will last you for many years so take your time until you find exactly what you are looking for.

I was patient in my search and scored this headboard on Marketplace for only $35. A solid oak piece that was handmade by a carpenter. It’s a heavy solid piece that I know we will enjoy for years to come.

You are definitely worth the time and energy it takes to get your bedroom clean and organized. You deserve to have a beautiful space where you can relax and recharge after a long day. Make you master bedroom a priority, you deserve it!
