I bake fresh bread almost every day, so I almost always have day old bread that needs to be used. It’s not very good the second day for sandwiches but it’s perfect for French toast!

Have you always wanted to try your hand at baking bread but were just to intimidated by the whole yeast thing? Does the whole idea of letting the dough proof and punching the dough sound confusing and time consuming? Have you always thought it would be too difficult for you to figure out? Well I’m here to tell you that I found a method that makes baking a beautiful loaf of French bread really easy. Once you see how easy it is you will be kicking yourself for not trying it sooner! Check out my post here that explains the method that I use.

You can thank me after you have scarfed down 1/2 a loaf with some butter slathered on it ☺️

You can easily bake artisanal loaves of bread just like this one.

I digress. So, back to making French toast…slice bread into 1/2 inch thick slices. You can use any type of bread that you have on hand, but stale bread actually makes the best French toast. White breads, Brioche, Challah or French bread are the best base.

TIP: Try using cinnamon swirl bread when making French toast, YUM!

In a shallow bowl combine an egg and 3-4 tablespoons milk. Whisk together until combined.

Add in ground cinnamon and my secret ingredient…vanilla powder. Whisk to combine with the egg and milk.

Place slices of bread in the egg mixture and allow the bread to soak up the egg batter.

After a minute or so, flip the bread slices and allow the remaining egg batter to be absorbed into the bread.

Melt two tablespoons butter in a heavy bottomed frying pan oven medium low heat. Once the butter has melted add the slices of egg soaked bread. Fry until golden brown and then flip each piece over and fry on the other side until golden crispy brown.

TIP: It’s IMPORTANT to COOK the egg battered bread slices OVER LOW HEAT to allow the egg to cook completely. If you cook at a high temperature the outsides will get burnt before the egg batter absorbed in the bread slices cooks through, resulting in burnt but mushy French toast. Nope, don’t want that! Mushy French toast is disgusting!

Low and slow cooking will result in perfectly cooked French toast; lightly browned and crisp on the outside and firm and cooked through on the inside.

Top with real maple syrup and serve with sausage links and fresh fruit to round out the meal.

Or you can serve with a side of crispy bacon. Learn about the various methods for cooking bacon to get it just the way you like it best here. Yup, I wrote an entire post on how to cook the perfect strip of bacon.
