An Easy To Make Baked Ham & Cheese Pierogi Casserole

Ok here’s a question for you, do you even know what a Pierogi is? Did you click on the link just to find out? Well if you are Polish or of Eastern European descent you know what these pillows of deliciousness are. If you are not familiar with them the closest thing I can think of to describe them is that they are the Eastern European version of an Italian ravioli. They are a stuffed pasta but instead of being filled with just cheese or Italian sausage they are typically filled with either a combo of mashed potatoes, onions and cheese or sautéed mushrooms, onions and sour kraut. And they are absolutely delicious!!!

A home made Sauerkraut Pirogge topped with grilled onions and sour cream.

Sometimes when I get a craving for that authentic taste and I have an afternoon to spend in the kitchen I will make a big batch of Sauerkraut Pirogge from scratch and freeze some for later. But when I’m short on time and still want some Pierogi goodness this easy to make casserole really hits the spot. It’s perfect for when you have leftover ham that needs using.

Using frozen Pierogi makes this a quick and tasty meal to get on the table. The smokey ham and melted cheddar cheese paired with the creamy potato filled pierogi makes this meal utterly irresistible! It’s a hearty meal that comes together quite quickly. Got pasta lovers in the family? Meat and potato lovers? This dish checks all the boxes.

You can find these in the freezer case of most grocery stores, use either the mini or regular size, either will work just fine for this recipe.

Preheat oven to 375℉. Grease baking dish.

Add frozen pierogi to the bottom of the prepared casserole dish in an even layer.

No need to thaw them.

Top with a layer of diced ham. Set aside.

In a skillet, sauté diced onion with butter over medium heat until soft, about 5 minutes.

Spoon the sautéed onions over the ham in the casserole dish.

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the softened cream cheese, sour cream, milk, salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Mix until well blended.

Add 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese.

Mix to combine all the ingredients together.

Spread the cheese mixture evenly over the Pierogi, ham and sautéed onions in the casserole dish.

Top with the remaining 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese.

Cover dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes.

Remove foil, and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes or until heated through and cheese is hot and bubbly.  Remove from the oven and allow casserole to sit for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Top with sliced green onions to serve.

Is there a more classic flavor profile than ham, cheddar cheese and potatoes? This casserole comes together with just 15 minutes of effort and the oven does all the hard work for you. Serve with a crisp green salad to round out the meal. My go to salad is this easy to make Rockin’ Good Rocket Salad. The tart easy to make dressing and peppery arugula compliments the smoky creaminess of this casserole perfectly! Give this easy to make meal a try, you are going to love it!

A light refreshing salad that pairs perfectly with this rich and creamy casserole.
