Are you sick and tired of looking for the rake, broom, or shovel? Are you sick and tired of all those garden tools falling over when you try to pull out the one you need? Are your garden tools scattered all around your garage, willy-nilly? Maybe some are leaning up against the fence in the backyard, getting rusty in the rain. Do you spend more time looking for the tools you need than you do on the actual project? Been there…done all of that!
I was searching for a rake the other day. I started looking around the garage, checked the garden shed out back…but no rake to be found. I finally found it leaning up against the fence in a corner of the yard. When I was done raking I went to put it away in our backyard shed, which was to lean it up against the wall in the shed, next to the broom and the shovels. Of course everything fell over and I was left with a hot mess on my hands. There had to be an easy way to get all our gardening tools organized, and without spending a fortune on any fancy, expensive, organization racks.
I wanted to hang the tools on the wall to get them off the ground, but I didn’t want to put a bunch of holes in the dry wall. If I didn’t hit a stud when screwing in hooks it wouldn’t support the weight of the tool and I would need to use bolts. More holes in the wall, not my first choice. Plus it would require a trip to the home improvement store and spending money on hooks and bolts I didn’t have.
As I stood there in frustration I noticed some long MDF boards of wood in the corner; leftovers from previous home improvement projects, and it got me thinking. Maybe I could use one of those boards to organize all my garden tools.
I had to ask my husband to help me with the first step, which was to secure a long board to the wall. We located studs in the wall and drilled through the board into the studs on either end of the board. We mounted the board about 7 feet off the ground. The scrap piece of wood I used was about 8 feet long by 12 inches high.
Then I scoured the garage, the garden shed, and the backyard and gathered together all our garden tools; the brooms, rakes, shovels, hoes, pick axe, post hole digger, and leaned them all up on a wall to see what I had.
I started with the largest tools first; the rakes, the big shovels, and the push broom. I held them up on the board and used a marker to mark where to hammer in a couple nails to hold them in place.
TIP: Angling the nails upward at a slight angle will prevent your tools from sliding off the nails when you hang them up and keep them in place where you want them.
Then I added nails to hang the smaller shovels and spades in between the larger tools on the board.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE how neat and tidy my storage shed looks now! All my gardening tools are in one place; easy to access and super easy to put back where they belong. It literally cost me a few pennies to make, only took a couple hours to set it up, it’s endlessly customizable, and I didn’t have to use any heavy duty bolts or put tons of holes in the wall either.
If I purchase a new tool, it’s so easy to use a hammer to pull out nails and move things around to accommodate more tools or reorganize them if needed. The scrap piece of wood is a good secure base that holds all the nails in place, so there’s no need to search for a stud in the wall when hanging a tool.
This is a very utilitarian, basic organization system, nothing fancy, but it works beautifully for my needs. If you felt inspired, you could definitely pretty it up with a coat of paint. I might get around to doing that someday, but no-one ever goes in our garden shed except my husband and me. Having my tools all in one place, easy to get to and put away, is the most important thing for me, and this little organization hack suits my needs perfectly!
If you’re struggling with getting your garden tools organized, don’t have a lot of money to spend on a fancy organizer, and you have some wall space, give this inexpensive tool organizer a try.
