Are You Mad For Plaid? How To Use It Effectively In Your Christmas Decor

Plaid instantly creates a Christmas vibe and it’s one of the easiest ways to create a festive Christmas look for the holidays. It’s a timeless classic that never goes out of style. I’ve always loved plaid. I think it stems from my Dad. His favorite item to wear in the cold winter months were his plaid wool Pendleton shirts. I guess you can say, plaid holds a special place in my heart and it’s become my favorite way to add some holiday cheer to my Christmas decor.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with decorating your home for the holidays. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Instead of covering every horizontal surface of your home with holiday themed tchotchkes consider using plaid textiles. Not only will it add a lovely holiday touch to your decor, but it’s useful decor that won’t add a cluttered feel to your home.

Decorating your home for Christmas can be as easy as placing a plaid placemat under a simple everyday place-setting at the table. Add a freshly ironed, crisp, white, cloth napkin tied with a piece of twine to elevate an everyday place setting to something a little more special for your holiday table. Tuck in a sprig of fresh rosemary and a cinnamon stick to add a lovely natural element to each place setting. Simple, organic, inexpensive, with a bright pop of color, can also be elegant. The perfect touch for your holiday table. No need to purchase a new set of dishes for the holidays, use what you already have in creative ways.

My everyday dishes look quite festive on top of this plaid placemat.

Plaid instantly adds the look of Christmas to your home without adding a lot of clutter. Use it on your bed to transform it for the holidays. You are going to be changing out the sheets on the bed anyways, might as well change them out with some festive plaid bedding.

Instead of using bulky comforters that will need to be stored after the holidays, purchase in inexpensive duvet cover to completely transform the look of your bed. Slip it over your existing comforter to add a lovely holiday pop to the bedroom. Bonus…most duvets come in a set with matching pillow cases. Add a festive holiday pillow in a coordinating color as a focal point to complete the look.

The wonderful thing about using plaid in you decor is that plaids can easily be mixed and matched. You want to keep two important elements in mind to mix and match plaids effectively. Because too much of it can quickly become too busy and chaotic looking.

Color

To mix plaids effectively be sure to stick to a tight color pallet; keep them all in the same color family. The red in each of these plaid throws pulls the look together.

Scale

Vary the scale, and the size when mixing and matching various plaids.

Take a look at the bedding below for a a good example of mixing plaids effectively. Let’s break down why it works.

The red plaid adds a lovely pop of color that ties in with the red snowflake accent pillow.

The grey plaid pillow cases work well with the grey plaid throw. Even though the scale is similar, the grey color is what pulls them together and makes the look work without looking too busy.

The smaller red plaid on the Euro pillows plays well with the grey plaids because the scale of the plaid is much smaller and doesn’t compete with the larger scale of the grey plaids. If the scale was the same size the look would be much too busy. Each of the plaids would be competing for attention.

Mix and match plaids.

Think about different ways you can use plaid textiles in your holiday decor to add a classic Christmas look to your home.

My favorite room of the house for Christmas is the dining room. Do you love serving up a traditional Christmas meal for your family and friends like I do? After the Christmas tree, I focus most of my energy decorating the dining room for the holidays.

Instead of filling the room with loads of tchotchkes, plaid textiles can be the star of the show that infuse the room with holiday cheer.

One of my all time favorite ways to add holiday cheer is transforming the china hutch in my dining room. It’s the focal point in the room. It serves as the perfect backdrop to the holiday table. Adding plaid panels and topping it with a garland studded with organic, natural elements gives it a lovely holiday flair without adding clutter.

I updated a 25 year old, oak china hutch by chalk painting it white. Besides the table, it is the only other piece of furniture in the room and it needed a dose of Christmas cheer for the holidays. Adding plaid can easily transform a china hutch into a festive Holiday Hutch. It’s a stunning backdrop to any holiday table.
