How To Make Natural Herbal Bug Repellant Luminaries

There’s nothing worse than trying to enjoy a beautiful evening outside and being eaten alive by pesky biting bugs. Nobody really wants to douse themselves in bug sprays but when the bugs are biting what are you going to do? If you have a couple lemons on hand, some Rosemary growing in your garden and some essential oils, you can easily put together these all natural luminaries to keep those pesky bugs at bay. Not only are they effective at keeping those bugs away, they’re oh so pretty too. They make the perfect lovely accents for any of your outdoor entertaining parties.

Useful and beautiful.

Line them up on the table for dinner or scatter them around your patio. Not only will they keep the bugs away, but they will add a lovely fragrance to the night air and add the beautiful ambient glow of candle light. And let’s face it, candlelight always makes a get together feel just a little more special, doesn’t it? Even a weeknight meal outside feels more special when you add candle light. Everyone seems to linger around the table just a bit longer when there’s candles on the table.

Only a few simple inexpensive items are needed to make these lovely luminaries.

Supplies:

  • Wide mouth mason jars
  • Floating candles
  • Sprigs of rosemary
  • Lemons
  • Water
  • Lemon essential oil
  • Rosemary essentil oil

Place a few sprigs of rosemary in each mason jar.

Add slices of lemon to the jar.

Fill the jar with water. For extra bug repelling action, add several drops of both lemon and rosemary essential oils. If you don’t have essential oils on hand, don’t worry, these luminaries will still keep bugs at bay, but the essential oils give them a little more punch and smell a lot better as the candles burn.

To finish, place a floating candle in the jar.

TIP: If you’re using regular mason jars instead of wide mouth jars, use a smaller votive candle. Remove the candle from it’s metal cup and float the votive in the jar.

I found these candles at the DollarTree; (2 for $1.25).

These luminaries are quite lovely and they are a beautiful accent on your patio table. You can assemble them in just a couple minutes and they will burn for 3-4 hours. That gives you plenty of bug free time to relax and enjoy the evening with your family and friends.

As a side note: these are the perfect luminaries to set out on the picnic table when you’re camping. Not only do they look lovely and smell great but they help keep the bugs at bay too. Perfect for the great outdoors.

Such a beautiful, lovely alternative to toxic bug sprays.
