My boys have always loved a yellow box cake with chocolate frosting. Nothing could be any easier to make, but it just isn’t a very impressive cake. Even when you add candles it’s just a ho-hum, run of the mill, kind of cake.
Adding just a few simple touches to a boxed cake, will take it from ho-hum to adorable in no time at all.
I found a picture of this cake on Pinterest years ago. There were no instructions but I looked at the image and thought to myself, “how hard cold it really be”. Turns out it’s not hard at all to make.
Bake you favorite boxed cake in two round cake pans, following the directions on the box. You can use any flavor, my boys happen to love yellow cake the best.
Allow the cake to cool completely, then frost with your favorite frosting. You can choose to make it from scratch or purchase ready made frosting instead.
Once you have frosted the cake take Kit Kat candy bars and break them into 2 piece pieces.
Take the Kit Kat bar pieces and press them into the side of the cake. The frosting will act as a glue to hold them in place. Encircle the entire cake with Kit Kat candy bars.
Once you have encircled the cake with Kit Kat bars, use a length of ribbon and wrap it around the outside of the cake and tie off in a pretty bow.
TIP: Lining your cake plate with foil or waxed paper will keep the frosting off your cake platter and keep the presentation looking its nicest. Once you have finished frosting your cake, gently pull the foil out from underneath the cake. No frosting smudges on you platter!
Using a spoon, top the cake evenly with sprinkles. The original recipe called for topping the cake with plain M&Ms, but we found it to be just too darn sweet. It was so sweet, I swear, it made my teeth hurt. So a few years back I opted to use sprinkles instead of the M&Ms.
Add candles and you are all set. All that is needed is the birthday boy, some family and friends, and matches. Don’t forget that you will need matches to light the candles.
What a fun, colorful, festive cake! I urge you to give this recipe a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy this is to pull together and how adorably it turns out.
