I have a confession to make, over the years I’ve accumulated a lot of Christmas decor, and I mean a lot! Boxes and boxes of Christmas baubles, greenery, ornaments, tchotchkes, and assorted holiday bric-a-brac. Sound familiar? Do you spend countless hours perusing beautiful online images of tastefully decorated homes for Christmas with all the latest trends for inspiration? Do you feel the need to constantly add the latest new thing to your decor like I do? Let’s get real…when does it all just become to darn much?
Maybe it’s when just the thought of bringing out the Christmas decorations exhausts you. If it takes you hours and hours over the course of a week to decorate your house, you might be at that critical mass point. When you pass up spending time with family and friends because you’re still decorating your house, you may have tipped the scales of too much stuff.
Instead of going out and spending more money on the latest Christmas trend, this year I’m challenging myself to not purchase any new Christmas decor and committing to using less of the decor I already have. I’ve decided that if I add anything to my decor, it will something no-cost from Mother Nature. Are you ready to join me? Your pocketbook will thank you. And you might just have the most relaxed Christmas ever, or at least since childhood when your mom did everything, LOL.
Are you up for the challenge, saving some hard earned cash, and your sanity? Are you ready to spend less time decorating and spending more time with your family and friends over the holidays making good memories? Keep reading to find out how to do it and still have a beautifully festive home for the holidays.
Pick a focal point in each room.
Instead of covering every horizontal surface with tchotchkes that tend to make your home look and feel cluttered, pick a focal point in each room and focus your decorating efforts to that spot. A classic spot is a fireplace mantle.
Instead of putting certain items in the same spots year after year, change things up and use your Christmas decorations in new ways. It will feel completely new without having to spend a dime.
In the dining room focus your efforts on the table area to set the tone.
Create Vignettes.
Instead of sprinkling items all around the house, be more intentional and group items together to create holiday vignettes. Select key focal points in each room and focus your decorations to those specific areas in the room. Prime real estate for adding vignettes would be a kitchen island, kitchen table, dining room table, sideboard or china hutch, coffee table, sofa table or side table. It’s easy to get carried away, so try to keep it to just one or two spots in each room. Remember, less is more.
Use greenery and ribbon.
Look up. Instead of covering every horizontal surface with Christmas decor add a little greenery and pretty bows to hanging lamps, the tops of cabinets and hutches. Add a pop of color by adding some festive ribbon to everyday items in your home.
Use fabrics to set the tone.
Look for ways to add functional decor like pillows, blankets, throws, and towels. They all add Christmas charm without adding clutter. Add a festive shower curtain and holiday inspired towels in the guest bath. Add a plaid comforter, festive pillows and a fluffy throw on the bed. A blanket ladder with cozy throws are always welcome on a cold night. Not only will textiles add festive pops of color but they’re functional as well.
Functional Decor.
Instead of putting out tchotchkes, look around your home and try to find easy, creative ways to add festive pops of color with functional decor. Changing out a dark planter for a red one adds a charming festive touch without adding visual clutter.
Add a festive tissue box and a set of Christmas inspired coasters. Not only are they functional but they will add a lovely touch of holiday cheer.
Simplifying the decor in your home lets you focus your energy on the Christmas tree. It’s typically the focal point for the holidays and sets the tone in your entire home. Over the years I’ve made many of the ornaments on the tree, mixed in with some store bought items, and my most treasured ornaments; the popsicle stick snowflakes covered in glitter made by my boys in elementary school. ❤️

I’m hoping these simple tips will help to streamline your Christmas decorating and free up your time so you can spend it with the people that mean the most to you. Let go of perfection and the latest trends. Use what you already have in different ways so it feels fresh and new without having to spend a dime. Use less of what you have and focus on just a couple key areas in each room. Using less decor at Christmas means less to put away after the holidays are over. That’s a win-win in my book!
