I know, I know, a box of brownie mix is relatively inexpensive. So you’re probably asking, “Why bother making your own mix” right? Have you looked at the list of ingredients on the box of most of the major brands on the supermarket shelves? When there are more unpronounceable chemical additives than ingredients that I have in my pantry it sends up red flags. I know we can’t completely eliminate all the preservatives and additives from our diet but when I find an easy, affordable way to reduce them, I’m all over it! This brownie mix uses just a handful of ingredients you probably already have in your panty. Once you stir together the mix, it’s ready to go whenever you get a hankering for some freshly baked, warm, chewy fudge brownies fresh from the oven. It takes no longer than using a boxed mix, they’re better for you, and way tastier too!

How To Make The Brownie Mix:
This is the hard part, and it’s not hard at all! If you can plop ingredients into a bowl and stir them together, you can easily do this.
To a large mixing bowl add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder.

Stir to combine all the ingredients.

Transfer to an air tight container and store in a cool dark location for up to six months. It won’t last that long, guaranteed!

Helpful Hint: Tape the instructions for how to bake the brownies to the container where you will be storing your dry mix.

How To Bake Brownies:

Preheat oven to 350℉. Grease a 9×9 inch pan. Set aside.
Place 2¼ cups of the brownie mix in a mixing bowl. Add vanilla, melted butter, and eggs to the bowl.

Stir everything together with a wooden spoon to combine. Don’t over-mix.

Stir in any add-ins, just to combine. I added butterscotch chips to this batch.

Stir In Idea’s:
- milk chocolate chips
- dark chocolate chips
- white chocolate chips
- peanut butter chips
- butterscotch chips
- mint chips
- peanuts
- chopped pecans
- chopped almonds
- chopped walnuts
Spread the batter into the prepared pan in an even layer.

Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out mostly clean. The center will still be gooey but it will set up as it cools. Keep a close eye and try not to over bake. You’re aiming for gooey and soft with chewy edges not dry and crumbly hard.

Remove brownies from the oven and allow them to cool for 10-15 minutes.

Cut brownies into squares.
TIP: Wet the knife when cutting brownies into squares to prevent the dough from sticking to the knife blade.

The next time you get a hankering for some warm, chewy, fudge brownies stir together the mix and bake yourself some of the best tasting brownies you’ve ever had. This is one dessert you can actually feel good about serving your family, and they will never know that they are eating something that’s better for them than the chemical laden brownies they’re used to. Dare I say it? Healthy brownies? Heck yes!!! It’s about time! Got milk?
