How To Make A Classic Old Fashioned Apple Crisp

Can you feel it? Fall is definitely in the air! The trees are sporting their colorful autumn hues, the evenings are crisp and cool, and leaves on the ground crackle underfoot; sweater weather is finally here! Everywhere you turn there’s pumpkin spice everything; pumpkin spice latte’s and tea’s, pumpkin bread, pumpkin pie, pumpkin donuts, and cookies. Don’t get me wrong, I adore everything pumpkin spice but I don’t think, apples and cinnamon, my personal favorite fall flavors, get nearly the attention they justly deserve! This classic, easy to make Apple Crisp captures those quintessential fall flavors we all grew up with. Easier to make than a pie, but with all the same fabulous flavors, and served with a side of vanilla ice cream. This is one dessert you’ll be happy you made!

Preheat oven to 350℉.

Place the baking dish on a cookie sheet. This will keep your oven clean in case the filling bubbles up over the edge of the baking dish as it bakes.

Prepare filling:

Peel and core apples. I use Granny Smith apples because I like their tartness, but any firm apple will work.

Cut apples into ¼ inch thick slices and place them in a large mixing bowl.

Add ⅔ cup brown sugar, ½ cup cornstarch, 1 teaspoon cinnamon and ½ teaspoon nutmeg to the sliced apples.

Stir to coat the apple slices with the cornstarch/sugar/spice mixture.

Transfer apples slices to the baking dish. Set aside while you prepare the topping.

Prepare the topping:

Place rolled oats, ½ cup flour, ½ cup brown sugar, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon salt in a mixing bowl.

Cut the stick of cold butter into small pieces.

Add the butter to the topping mixture.

Use a pastry cutter to work the butter into the oat mixture until the butter pieces are about the size of peas.

Spoon the topping onto the filling in the baking dish, spreading it out to cover the filling.

Bake in preheated oven for 60-70 minutes or until the filling is hot and bubbly and the oats are a rich golden brown.

Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 30 minutes before serving.

Top each serving with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Oh my goodness, this apple crisp is freaking AMAZING! Not only is it oh so much easier to make than an apple pie, but it has all the wonderful flavors of a pie and a delectable crumbly topping to boot! Served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream melting into it, and you are going to be in apple cinnamon heaven with your very first bite! It’s a lovely autumn dessert that is sure to please…GUARANTEED!
