How To Make Applebee’s Asian Chicken Wonton Tacos

I love a good happy hour and a great bargain! Many restaurants offer great deals on their appetizers for happy hour, up to half off sometimes. I absolutely adore Applebee’s Chicken Wonton Tacos. They may be diminutive in size but they sure do pack a big punch of flavor. The ratio of crunchy shell to savory filling, topped off with a tangy asian flavored slaw is perfection! Every bite is that perfect bite where all those wonderful flavors and textures come together. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. Make these for your Super Bowl party. They will disappear faster than the commercial breaks between plays.

Prepare shells:

Preheat oven to 375℉.

Lay wonton wrappers on work surface and spray with non-stick cooking spray or brush lightly with olive oil.

Place a sheet of foil onto your work surface for easier cleanup.

Spray both sides.

Drape wrappers along the edge of an oven safe casserole dish.

Bake for 7-8 minutes or until light golden brown and crisp. Keep a close eye on them so they don’t burn.

Remove wrappers from the oven and gently pry them apart while they’re still hot and pliable. Set aside.

Prepare slaw:

Slice and chop cabbage.

Slice green onions.

Chop Cilantro.

Place thinly sliced cabbage, sliced green onions, chopped cilantro (reserve some for garnish), sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce and honey in a bowl.

Stir to combine. Set slaw aside.

Prepare filling:

We are using the same cast of characters for the chicken, plus Hoisin sauce.

Place ground chicken, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, garlic and ginger in a large mixing bowl.

Mix together until well combined.

Heat a skillet over medium heat. When skillet is hot add seasoned chicken mixture. Brown the meat and cook through, breaking it up with a wooden spoon into small crumbles as it cooks.

Assemble tacos:

Add a couple tablespoons of the cooked, crumbled chicken to each shell.  Top with slaw and garnish with chopped cilantro and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.

Serve with sweet chili sauce and lemon wedges.

Don’t let the long list of ingredients and the numerous steps scare you off from trying this recipe. There are three parts to the recipe, and it’s actually a snap to make when you break it down into easy-to-do steps. You actually use the same flavors in the slaw and the meat filling. Using the same flavor profile in the chicken and in the slaw is why it works so well together.

If you have a fairly well stocked pantry and cook asian foods regularly you will probably have all the seasonings you need on hand. If not, you can easily find all these ingredients at any major supermarket with an Asian food section.

The crunchy shells are a lovely contrast of texture to the savory filling and crisp, tangy slaw. The sweet chili sauce and squeeze of lemon juice is the perfect finish for these utterly delightful little Asian flavored bites. It’s a healthy little treat topped with fresh veggies so you can actually feel good about indulging in these tasty little morsels of yumminess! Give these a try, you will love them!
