How To Make The Best Ever State Fair Garlic Dip

Every year I look forward to going to the State Fair. My favorite pastime isn’t the rides at the midway. Nor is it all the exhibits, although they make the entire experience enjoyable. It’s not even the concerts or live music that we also enjoy wholeheartedly. As a self proclaimed foodie my favorite pastime is eating and drinking my way through the fair; munching on a corn dog slathered in mustard, sipping a refreshing raspberry wine slushy from the wine garden, savoring a fried funnel cake topped with powdered sugar (deep fried dough…be still my beating heart), dipping deep fried artichoke hearts in Ranch dressing, and wolfing down a crispy fried egg roll on a stick dripping with sweet and sour sauce. Oh…and don’t forget munching on a big bag of freshly popped kettle corn washed down with an ice cold beer. I love the Fair!!! My waistline? Not so much…LOL!

I also have a very specific mission when we go; to purchase the coveted envelopes of Garlic Dip seasoning. Hands down it makes the best dip I’ve ever had! I know exactly what building and where the vendor sets up his booth every year. When we find the booth, there are several flavors to choose from. Grab a pretzel stick and start sampling. All the flavors are delicious, but their Garlic Dip is by far the very best!

During the dark days of Covid there was no State Fair. For two long years, no State Fair, and no Garlic Dip graced our holiday table! Last year the fair opened up again! Horror of horrors, the vendor no longer had a booth at the fair! Can I say it? Covid has ruined all the best things!!! After my total disappointment, in utter desperation, I was able to find the dip mix online, but I had a hard time shelling out $5 a packet. There was always a special at the Fair; $5 per packet or four for $15. No free samples to try and no State Fair specials online though. For several years I always served up the Garlic Dip for Thanksgiving and Christmas. My family always knew I would make a batch and looked forward to the dip at the holidays. After the holidays with only 2 envelopes left I often remember standing in the pantry asking myself if a certain get-together was dip worthy. You think I’m joking, but I’m dead serious! I was so very stingy about those 4 precious packets of dip mix each year. You knew I loved you if I made you Garlic Dip, not everyone in my life merits the Garlic Dip.

When I came across an empty dip packet in my pantry that I had saved so I could order more online, I took a closer look at the short list of ingredients and decided to do what I always end up doing; figure out how to make it myself at home.

After a couple tries, my family and friends all agree, I finally nailed it! The last batch I made for Easter was the best! My sister-in-law and the hubs think it’s even better than the State Fair version we loved for all those years! Not only is it one of the quickest and easiest dips to make, it’s also very affordable to make it! I could easily make 50 batches of dip with what used to cost me $15 for just four.

Are you ready to find out to make it? You’re going to love how easy it is to make! Start by placing a cup of mayonnaise and a cup of sour cream in a mixing bowl.

I use Best Foods mayonnaise (also known as Hellman’s in some parts of the US) and full fat sour cream to make this dip. It gives the dip the richest, creamiest consistency. I don’t know if you will get the same great results using low fat ingredients or Miracle Whip.

Next add the herbs and spices.

Nothing exotic here, you probably have everything in your pantry.

To the sour cream and mayo in the bowl add, 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon dried minced garlic flakes, 2 tablespoons minced dried onions, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, and 1 teaspoon Kosher salt.

You can stop here and you will have an utterly delicious dip, but to give this dip a fresher, even more robust garlic flavor I added 4 cloves of freshly minced garlic. Yes 4 cloves!

Adjust the amount of fresh garlic to suit your taste. We are absolute garlic addicts so I add a lot of freshly minced garlic, but adding even just one clove will brighten up the garlicy good flavor profile of this irresistible dip.

Stir everything together until everything is well combined and you have a smooth creamy dip. Cover and refrigerate for a minimum of two hours to allow flavors to fully develop; overnight is even better.

Serve dip chilled with your favorite dippers; potato chips are always a crowd favorite. Also delicious with corn chips, tortilla chips, pretzel sticks, snap peas, sliced bell peppers, carrot sticks, celery sticks, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, and broccoli spears.

LEFT OVER SUGGESTIONS: Also delicious on a baked potato or used as a sandwich spread, if you ever have any leftovers.

You could spackle your shoes with this dip and they would be delicious! Anything you serve with this dip is going to get devoured! Yes, it’s that good!!! Trust me when I tell you that this is the best dip you will ever eat! It will make you famous in your circles! Move over Ranch, step aside French onion, outta the way Spinach dip, none of them can hold a candle to this delectably delicious creamy garlic dip!!!
