How To Make The Best French Onion Burgers

What makes these grilled onion burgers so darn delicious? The secret is cooking the onions low and slow to caramelize and develop their sweet goodness. The grilled onions add a lovely depth of flavor that you don’t get with a typical burger. So fire up the grill one last time before the cold weather sets in. After your first bite you’ll be glad you did!

Start by peeling and slicing onions into thin slices.

Melt butter in a large heavy bottomed skillet over medium-low heat. 

Add onions and thyme to the skillet. Stir to coat onions with the butter.

Cook onions over medium-low heat, stirring often until onions begin to brown.

After about 10 minutes, add a couple tablespoons water to prevent onions from sticking and burning.

Continue cooking onions, adding water when mixture seems dry, until onions turn a deep golden brown.

Not quite there yet, but getting close.

When onions are caramelized to a deep golden brown, add a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar. 

Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes until liquid has cooked off. Season with salt to taste. Remove from heat. Set aside.

Place ground beef in a mixing bowl. Add soup mix and Worcestershire sauce to the beef.

Mix together.

Form beef into three or four patties.

Spread mayonnaise onto the hamburger buns.

Heat barbecue grill to 350°. Grill beef patties, 7-8 minutes per side or until cooked through.

Grill each bun until toasted.

Top each beef patty with a slice of provolone cheese and a mound of grilled onions.

Place a slice of Provolone cheese on each bottom portion of the grilled bun.

Top with a beef patty and the top half of the buns.

Serve immediately.

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp thyme
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 pkg dry onion soup mix
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 8 slices Provolone cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 tsp mayonnaise

Instructions
