There’s a very good reason these cinnamon rolls have gone viral, they are absolutely FREAKING AMAZING! I adore Cinnamon rolls, but I don’t adore the long time it takes to make them from scratch. Whenever I take a look at making cinnamon rolls from scratch I keep going due to the long amount of time it takes to make them. It doesn’t look all that hard to do, but allowing enough time for the dough to rise means getting started in the kitchen at oh dark thirty. I don’t know about you but I kinda like sleeping in on the weekends. And nobody has time to make cinnamon rolls from scratch on a busy weekday morning. Sadly no cinnamon rolls have come out of the oven at our house, unless they are the store bought refrigerated kind in a tube that you pop in the oven. Shocking, I know.
Jump to RecipeI love how quick and easy it is to bake up those refrigerated rolls, but I have to confess, overall they are rather disappointing. Everyone craves hot, cinnamony rolls, drenched in a delectable glaze. Sadly you don’t get that from a basic can of refrigerated store bought rolls. I always want more cinnamon and much more glaze than what comes in the package.
When I kept coming across video after video of these easy to make cinnamon rolls I knew I had to give them a try to see if all the hoopla was truly warranted. Would they measure up to the claim that they are better than a hot baked Cinn-a-bon? Could you even get close to that using store bought cinnamon rolls from the refrigerated section of the grocery store? I know, it’s a tough job, but somebody has to give it a try to find out…right? I was up for the challenge!
This is what I call a halfway homemade recipe. It takes advantage of a store bought convenience ingredient but you make it homemade by adding a few simple ingredients to make it delicious! Anyone can make these, even if you don’t think you have a cooking or baking bone in your body.
Start by preheating oven to 350℉.
Prepare Cinnamon Topping:
Yes the rolls come with a cinnamon filling, but we want to up the cinnamon factor by at least 150%. In a small bowl combine brown sugar, cinnamon and melted butter.
Stir to combine all the ingredients. Set aside.
Prepare Cinnamon Rolls:
Generously grease baking dish.
Place cinnamon rolls in greased baking dish.
Pour heavy cream over the cinnamon rolls. Making sure the cream pools around the rolls in the baking dish. You may need a little more or a little less cream. I eyeballed it.
Spread the brown sugar mixture over the cinnamon rolls in the baking dish.
Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and baked through.
Make The Frosting:
Place reserved frosting packet that comes with the tube of rolls, the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl.
Beat on high until the frosting is smooth and creamy.
Spread the frosting onto the baked cinnamon rolls after they come out of the oven, while they are still hot.
Serve immediately. Delicious with coffee!
Note: To double the recipe, use two tubes of cinnamon rolls.
The original recipe calls for using two tubes of cinnamon rolls, but I know that we won’t be able to eat that many rolls with only three of us. I would give it a good effort but my waist line would expand even more…sigh. So I knew portion control was needed. I halved the recipe by using just one tube of cinnamon rolls. I kept the ratios for the cinnamon and frosting the same as for a double batch. I also added vanilla extract to the frosting because I think it adds a lovely vanilla touch that compliments the cinnamon filling perfectly!
I brought this to a ladies brunch and it was a total hit! Everyone, and I mean everyone wanted the recipe! The cinnamon rolls are packed with loads of cinnamony goodness, and the dough to frosting ratio was perfection. I was a bit worried about adding the heavy cream, but they were tender and perfectly gooey, not soggy or mushy at all. These are everything you crave when you crave a cinnamon roll. You must give these a try! They are one of the easiest, best recipes I have tried in a long time. All the hype online is definitely warranted! Once you give them a try you will understand why they have gone viral online.
