How To Make Your Own Seasoned Salt

I recently ran out of seasoned salt so I added it to my shopping list to pick up at the market on my next trip. While I was perusing the spice isle I found several brands to choose from. So to make the best choice I took a closer look at the ingredients on the bottles. Have you ever taken a close look at the ingredients in a container of seasoned salt? It contains tasty things like Canola oil and FD&C Red #40 Lake, a food coloring. Not exactly the type of seasonings I want to add to my food. I decided to skip the commercial brands and make my own instead.

Let’s take a closer look at these ingredients, shall we? Studies have show that seed oils, such as Canola oil can have detrimental negative effects on our health. Seed oils are highly processed and loaded with omega-6 fatty acids that can put you at risk for inflammation, and inflammation is at the root of all illness. Seed oils have also been shown to contribute to the accumulation of toxins in body fat which can lead to weight gain. Some doctors believe it may be why may of us have such a hard time losing weight.

Large amounts of seed oils are present in many processed foods so you may be ingesting more than you realize. The jury is still out on how harmful seed oils can be to your health, but more and more doctors are warning of its harmful effects. Being cautious and limiting how much you consume would be prudent until we know definitely what effects it’s having on our health.

FD&C Red #40 Lake is a chemical synthetic dye used in mostly cosmetics and approved by the FDA for use in our food supply in the United States in 1971. Red #40 is a food dye made from petroleum, a liquid found beneath the Earth’s surface that is used to produce fuel. A lake is made by combining a dye with a metallic salt, such as aluminum hydroxide, which makes the dye insoluble. High levels of Aluminum in the body have been shown to be a contributing factor in causing dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Some individuals may have an allergic reaction to food dyes to include hives, itching, runny nose, and vomiting. In rare cases, anaphylaxis has been reported. There is also some evidence to suggest artificial food dyes may cause hyperactivity in about 30% of children with ADHD.

The bottom line? It’s probably a good idea to to eliminate artificial ingredients, chemicals, and dyes from your diet whenever you can. This easy to make seasoned salt is just one way to do exactly that. You can whip up a batch in just a few short minutes and you will know that what you are feeding your family is not only healthy but it’s good tasting too.

Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl; Himalayan salt, Paprika, Garlic powder, Onion powder and dried Parsley flakes.

Stir to combine.

Use a funnel to transfer seasoning to a small jar or a spice jar with a shaker top.

Store in an airtight container, preferably not plastic.

Instead of FD&C Red #40 Lake to give this seasoned salt its beautiful color, pink Himalayan salt and paprika provide a lovely natural color. Use this seasoning in all your favorite recipes. It’s such a versatile, flavorful addition to almost everything you’re cooking. And you can feel good about serving it to your family!
