How To Properly Dry & Store Citrus Slices

If you are a regular visitor to Nature Way you already know I love to use natural accents in my home and dried citrus slices are the perfect lovely natural accent to use for the holidays. Not only do they smell lovely but they look lovely too.

When dried they become almost translucent. Kind of like nature’s version of stained glass. Just lovely don’t ya think?

Beautiful!

This is one of the easiest projects to do and you end up with a lovely scented accent for your home.

No fancy or expensive equipment needed to dry citrus fruit slices. Just a sharp knife and your oven. You don’t need a dehydrator for this project because you can easily dry citrus slices using your oven.

Begin by preheating your oven to 180 degrees.

Using a sharp knife slice citrus fruits into thin slices.

Don’t worry if not all of them turn out perfectly.

Use the not so perfect slices in a simmering potpourri.

Line a baking sheet with foil and top with a baking rack. You could also line a cookie sheet with parchment paper if you don’t have a rack.

Place sliced citrus on the baking rack and bake for 3 – 4 hours.

Turn citrus slices over every 60 minutes. If the slices aren’t completely dry after 3 hours remove them from the oven and air dry them on a wire rack. Drying times will vary depending on how thick or thin the slices are. This will prevent them from browning and curling in the oven.

Once the citrus slices are completely dried and there is no moisture remaining you can store them for several weeks in an airtight container.

Use a skewer to poke a hole through each slice.

Thread twine through the hole and, viola! A beautiful ornament that you can hang on your Christmas tree.

This is such an easy project using natures bounty for your home. I used lemons and lime, but oranges and grapefruit would make lovely dried citrus slices as well!!!
