Clear out the clutter
We seem to have a tendency of focusing our attention on decorating the other rooms of our homes first, often leaving the master bedroom for last. It can easily become a dumping ground for everything that doesn’t have a place elsewhere in your home. Piles of laundry, junk mail, magazines, books, and extra furniture can all end up in the bedroom. It’s all too easy to just close the door during the day and forget about it. But when night comes you are greeted to a cluttered unruly mess. Hardly an environment that induces a good nights sleep!
Negative space is so important to creating a restful, relaxing retreat. If you are interested in learning more about the importance of negative space in your home you can learn more about it here.
First order of business is to clear out all the clutter! I know, not fun, not exciting. I promise if you commit to doing the hard work of clearing out the clutter you will be so happy with how you feel in your space. I guarantee it!
How can you have a restful nights sleep surrounded by piles of it everywhere? Go through your room and get rid of anything that doesn’t belong there. Every item you get rid of will significantly improve the flow of energy in your room.
Envision that energy flowing around the room, every pile of laundry, every stack of paperwork stops that energy from circulating freely around the room. Instead it will get blocked at every pile. I promise you will notice a significant difference in how the room feels when you take the time to declutter and get rid of the items that don’t belong there. Plus it will look so much better too.
Pick soothing restful colors
Now that you have cleared to the clutter it’s time to address the walls. Painting your walls a soothing restful color is an inexpensive project you can easily do in a weekend that will result in a dramatic change. It will go a long way towards creating an inviting sanctuary.
Pick a color that will bring a smile to your face when you open your eyes first thing in the morning. A neutral color will be easiest to live with but consider using a pop of color in your master bedroom. This is your sanctuary so pick a color that you love. Chances are no one but you will ever see it so it’s the perfect room to try something a little different.
Try a soft blue. It will create an ethereal, dreamy quality to your space and feel like a breath of fresh air.
Consider going bold with black, yes black. Dark colors will actually make the walls recede and make your room feel larger. It will also make the room feel cozy and intimate. Think about how dramatic a black backdrop would be up against a crisp white trim. Done right it could be quite striking!
Not quite ready to commit to a bold color? A soft beige tone when done correctly can be anything but boring and is probably one of the most versatile options. It looks fabulous with crisp white linens and you can easily add bright pops of color to liven up the space. Freshly Baked by Valspar is a lovely easy to live with neutral to try.
A greige is another option to consider. A warm gray works well with almost any other color. Greige can create an edgy and industrial look but can be gentle and understated all at the same time. This versatility makes grieges a popular choice. Try Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore.
A soft buttery yellow will create a bright sunny feel to a room. Opt for something soft and ethereal nothing to saturated. Getting out of a cozy warm bed first thing in the morning might be just a little easier with a sunny cheerful color to greet you each morning.
Whatever color you choose pick the one that brings a smile to your face when you first wake up.
Invest in a comfortable mattress
When your budget allows invest in a good mattress. We spend a third of our lives in bed so cutting corners and trying to go on the cheap with a mattress is probably not a smart idea. It will negatively effect the quality of your life if you are trying to sleep on an uncomfortable mattress.
It’s important that you do your homework. There are so many features to consider when choosing a new mattress; memory foam, coil, pillow top, soft, firm, adjustable, to name just a few of the options that are available. Take your time making a decision until you find a mattress that meets your needs.
Dress your bed in good quality linens
This is the fun part! Don’t skimp on your bedding. The sheets touch your skin all night so you want to make sure you choose a soft breathable fabric. Anything that comes in direct contact with your skin should be soft to the touch ensure you are comfortable all night. Choose high thread count sheets in a good quality cotton. Linen sheets are another natural fiber to consider. Soft and breathable but significantly more expensive. Purchase the highest quality sheets that you can afford to buy. It will be well worth it.
