Oh so messy, but oh so good! I can’t think of a meal that brings back more happy childhood memories than Sloppy Joe’s. The reason for their popularity back in the 70’s? Super easy for mom to make with no complaints from the kids who gobble them up!
This is the perfect weeknight meal. You’ll never get any complaints from your kids when you make this for dinner. Forget the canned chemically tasting mixes! Just keep right on walking past those cans of Sloppy Joe mixes on the grocery store shelves and head over to the produce isle to grab a couple ingredients to make this recipe from scratch.
Trust me, making this from scratch is just as easy and tastes a thousand times better! GUARANTEED!
Start off by browning a pound of ground beef, diced onion and diced green bell pepper in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until beef is cooked through and onion and bell pepper are softened.
Drain off any excess fat. Stir in the garlic powder, brown sugar, mustard, and ketchup; mix thoroughly.
Reduce heat, and simmer for 5 minutes, until sauce thickens and is heated all the way through.
Taste and season with salt and pepper.
Toast hamburger buns on a skillet until lightly golden brown.
Pile a generous mound of the meat filling on toasted hamburger buns.
Be sure to provide everyone with lots of napkins! They are soooo good but they sure are messy!
