I picked up a pork shoulder on sale and instead of making my regular German pork roast I decided to make pulled pork instead. This recipe turned out so tasty and it’s so easy to put together! Cook up a roast this weekend and you will have a jump start on a variety of meals throughout the week. The meat is a great base for any Mexican meal or sliders.
If you would like to try my favorite German pork roast aka, Schweinabraten, you can find the recipe for it here.
I looked up recipes on line for a few different versions of how to make the best pulled pork. Some require a smoker, but I don’t have one of those. Too many steps involved. I wanted something simple that produced tasty results.
So after pouring through numerous recipes I decided to make my own version using my favorite kitchen appliance, my slow cooker. This pulled pork turned out fantastic! The meat was tender and moist and loaded with flavor. It can be used as a base for numerous dishes. It is so versatile and can be used in tacos, nachos, burritos, enchiladas or slider sandwiches.
This pairs really well with a creamy coleslaw if using the pulled pork for sliders. You can find my favorite coleslaw recipe here.
To make this pulled pork start by coating the entire roast with a generous layer of mustard and then season liberally with your favorite barbecue seasoning rub, pressing it into the roast with your hands.
In a large heavy bottomed pan, heat vegetable oil over medium high heat and brown roast on all sides.
Once roast is nicely browned on all sides remove it from the pan and place it in a slow cooker.
Most of the recipes I found for pulled pork don’t call for adding any liquid to the slow cooker. I’ve never cooked anything in my slow cooker with out adding some liquid so to be on the safe side I decided to add some liquid, just to be safe.
Deglaze the pan by pouring in a can of beef consommé and a can of water to the pot you browned the beef. Cook liquid to simmering over medium heat scraping up the browned bits in the bottom of the pan.
Pour beef consommé over roast in the slow cooker. Cover and cook roast on low for 8-10 hours.
Remove roast from the slow cooker and place on a large cutting board. Remove the bone. It should be easy to remove from the roast. Using two forks shred the pork.
Return shredded pork to the slow cooker to soak in the juices until ready to serve.
