Super Simple Autumn Accents To Usher In Fall

Fall with all it’s glorious, spectacular colors! The leaves are turning, mornings are crisp, and the cooler evenings call for a sweater once the sun goes down. Is Fall your favorite season? I adore autumn and I sure am looking forward to a break from the Northern California heat.

I confess, I’m a little late getting into Fall this year. We had temps near 100 just last week here in Northern California. Even though it doesn’t feel much like fall, the calendar says October, so I know it’s on its way. 🤞🏻

Adding simple autumn inspired accents will get you into the autumn frame of mind even if the weather outside is still screaming summer. It doesn’t have to be difficult, time consuming or expensive. A few simple, easy to add touches are all you need to bring autumn indoors.

I really want to encourage you to resist the urge to fill your home with loads of tchotchkes that can easily become clutter. Instead, look to nature for inspiration, and bring what you see going on outside into your home.

I wish this was the view from my windows!

Mother Nature gets it right every time, so you will never go wrong if you take your cues from the great outdoors. Today I want to share a just few simple ideas to inspire you. Easy accents that will get you into a fall frame of mind. Nothing fussy or contrived, just simple natural elements to add sophisticated, designer touches to your home.

Let’s start outside in the front yard. Adding a bright pop of color with mums is a quick and easy way to set the tone for fall out in your garden.

These bright yellow mums will bring a smile to everyones face.

Add potted mums along the walkway to your front door or on your front porch. It’s such an easy way to get a fall vibe going, even before you set foot inside your home.

Mums are an inexpensive way to add interest to your fall landscape.

Add a fall inspired wreath to your front door to greet visitors. I love the carefree unkempt look of this wreath. It looks a lot like the grassy hillsides surrounding my home at the moment.

Dried grass, acorns and fall leaves are what I see out my windows. What do you see outside your windows?

You can go with a more traditional fall wreath, or you can make this more unconventional looking one with just a few simple craft supplies in an afternoon. No special skills required to make it. It comes together quickly and has a truly unique look.

Think about ways you can add texture to your interior. Texture adds loads of interest without looking contrived. Pinecones are always an easy way to add texture to your decor. Something as simple as a rustic wooden trough filled with pinecones displayed on your fireplace mantle will add loads of interest and texture. How easy is that?

This rustic wooden trough filled with pinecones is a quintessential fall accent.

Fill lanterns with pinecones and use them to create a simple vignette like this one.

Lanterns are always a beautiful accent.

Adding a few pinecones to a bowl is an easy way to add texture. It’s such a simple way to add a natural element to your fall decor. Repeating elements in several locations around your home will give it a more cohesive, pulled together, unified look.

The days are getting shorter, so adding some sparkle with candles is always an elegant touch. These mercury glass candlesticks clustered together on a burlap runner add just a bit of glam to a rustic farmhouse table in the dining room. Note how varying the height of the candles makes for a more visually interesting composition.

The juxtaposition of rustic with glam makes for a simple but elegant centerpiece.

Think about creating vignettes in a few strategic locations throughout your home. You don’t need to decorate every horizontal surface in your house. Not only is it time consuming but it is totally unnecessary. Sometimes more and more is just too much. You want some negative space in your home. Having some negative space will make those vignettes really stand out. Select just a few high visibility spots in your home to add a simple fall inspired vignette. Easy peasy!

Some spots to consider adding a vignette: the fireplace mantle, kitchen island, coffee table, dining room table.

My kitchen island is one spot that I change up all the time. I have my favorite Charcuterie board as the base and my pedestal cake plate is a fairly permanent fixture. The other items change out constantly with the seasons and holidays. It keeps me from getting bored with my decor. I can easily change up a few decorative items and keep it looking fresh and interesting.

I’m talking simple items; a bouquet of fresh flowers from the grocery store, a bowl of fresh fruit, a special thrift store treasure, or a scented candle; simple inexpensive items that allow me to decorate with ease. Nothing expensive or permanent, which allows me to easily change things up whenever the mood strikes.

Looks like I need to bake up a batch of cookies.

A bowl filled with acorns adds a simple fall touch.

Acorns and pumpkins are lovely fall accents.

Keep a tight color pallet for a pulled together, cohesive, polished look.

Remember these simple rules when creating vignettes; the rule of three makes for a more attractive composition, varying the heights of items creates visual interest, and a tight color pallet will produce a cohesive, designer look.

Look for unique ways to add texture. This sisal covered planter adds a lovely layer of texture in an understated way.

See how easy it is to make a sisal covered planter just like this one. All you need is a hot glue gun, sisal rope and an ugly plastic container or old tin can. You can easily make one in just a few minutes.

Don’t throw out those corks! You might not think of corks as fall decor, but they have a lovely neutral color that adds a touch of texture to your dining room decor.

A tarnished silver bowl filled with tiny pinecones and a glass jar filled with corks adds a lovely touch of fall and loads of texture and interest in the dining room.

Don’t worry about polishing silver, a tarnished finish works so well with fall tones. It’s the lazy way to add fall interest in your decor.

Polished silver is always beautiful, but tarnished finishes are a lovely accent for fall.

Add some cozy in the family room with soft blankets and quilts. Soft textiles invite family to snuggle and stay for a while when the weather turns chilly.

Create cozy destinations where you can snuggle up with a warm cup of coffee once the weather turns cold.

Instead of using tchotchkes, add a few seasonal fall pops with textiles. I can hardly wait for the cooler weather to curl up in this comfy spot with a good book.

Transitioning your decor for fall really is easy. Don’t stress and put out loads of tchotchkes that you will need to put away in a few short weeks. Add just a few natural, seasonal fall touches in strategic locations throughout your home.

Yes I know it’s early October but we will be pulling out the Christmas decorations before you know it. So keep it simple and spend your days outside enjoying the beauty of autumn. Winter will be here before you know it.
