DIY – Sisal Planter

We all have them, those ugly black plastic containers from plants purchased at the nursery. Most of them get tossed into the trash. Even if you don’t have one readily available, save one the next time you purchase plants for your garden so you have what you need for this easy DIY project.

Recycle this ugly container into something beautiful.
Learn how easy it is to create this beautiful planter.

You can use almost any ugly container you have laying around the house for this DIY. Using a container with straight sides makes this a super easy project to do and really shows off the wonderful texture of the sisal rope.

An ugly plastic container, a length of rope and hot glue are all you need for this simple DIY project.

A 3 ingredient craft.

This easy DIY transforms those ugly containers into a beautiful, textural planter that you can display in your home.

The straight sides of the plastic container make it easy to cover.

This project is so stinking easy you will wonder why you never thought of it before. It took less than 20 minutes to make one planter.

Supplies Needed:
  • plastic container
  • sisal rope
  • glue sticks
  • glue gun
  • scissors

Look for a natural fiber rope, instead of a synthetic rope. The finished project will have a much more pleasing texture if you use a natural fiber.

You can find sisal rope like this at Home Depot for less than $10 a roll.

I used exactly one 50 ft. length of 3/8″ thick sisal rope to cover one 2 gallon plastic container. The length you need will depend on the size of the container and the thickness of the rope you are using. A 50 ft. length should do you, unless you are covering an extremely large container.

I used about a roll and a half (about 75 ft.) of 1/4″ thick sisal rope to cover a 2 gallon container. The thinner the rope the more you will need.

Thinner rope works well for smaller items.

If your container has holes along the bottom, use them to your advantage. Feed the end of the rope through one of the holes.

You won’t see these holes once you are finished with this project.

Glue the end of the rope to the inside of the pot, using a generous amount of hot glue. You want enough glue so that it completely covers the cut end of the rope. This will ensure the rope doesn’t start to unravel on you later on down the road.

Be generous with the glue when securing the cut end to the container.

Start wrapping the rope around the pot, glueing it into place as you go.

Keep the rope taught while wrapping and glueing it into place.

Be sure to press the rope into place so there are no visible gaps between the rope. It will look best if the container isn’t visible through the rope.

Glueing the rope in place goes very quickly.

Keep wrapping and gluing the rope in place, turning the container as you go until you have covered the entire surface of the container. Secure the cut end of the rope inside the lip of the container with another generous dab of hot glue.

It only took about 20 minutes to create. Look at how pretty it turned out!

What an amazing transformation for less than $10 and about 20 minutes of time. That’s a lot of bang for your buck!

This sisal covered planter is the perfect summer accent for your home. It has a coastal, beachy vibe without being kitschy, and adds loads of texture to your decor!!!

Look at how this planter lightened up the feel in my family room. The dark planter was beautiful, but I LOVE how this sisal planter lightened up the look for summer! Just changing out the planter made such a difference. So pretty!!!

Use any leftover rope you may end up with to cover other items like a soup can.

Instead of tossing out a soup can, clean it out and transform it into a pretty container to hold utensils, pens, pencils, or other decorative items like these paper straws.

A simple, festive 4th of July accent.

Such a simple, inexpensive DIY project. No special skills required. If you can operate a hot glue gun, you can easily make one, or two, or three of these gorgeous sisal planters. in under 30 minutes.

So happy with how this turned out!
