Recently I purchased an old cook book at one of my favorite thrift stores. When I got home a slip of paper fell out with this recipe on it, dated 1964. Thank you Marion for this delightful, vintage cookie recipe.

To start, gather together all the ingredients.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray a cookie sheet with non-stick cooking spray or line a cookie sheet with either a silpat liner or a sheet of parchment paper.
Using an electric mixer, cream together 2 sticks of butter with 6 tablespoons of sugar.

The recipe says to do this by hand. Goodness gracious! The women back in the 60’s must have had arms of steel. I can’t imagine creaming the sugar and butter together by hand!!! It took me almost 10 minutes on high speed using my electric mixer. I would still be at it after 2 days doing this by hand! I think perhaps Marian was an amazon woman or something…or maybe I just need to get to the gym more often, LOL.

Once you have a fluffy butter add the Vanilla extract and mix well.
In a small bowl sift together the flour and salt. The recipe calls for a pinch, I used 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
I turned the speed on the mixer to low and slowly added the flour and salt. Stop the mixer a few times and scrape down the sides as needed.
TIP: chop walnuts using your food processor. Pulse nuts until finely chopped.
Once the flour is incorporated, add the chopped walnuts. Mix together until well incorporated. The dough will be a bit crumbly.
Using your hands press dough together forming it into balls about 1 inch in size.

Place balls of dough about 1/2 an inch apart on prepared cookie sheet.

Bake for 15-20 minutes. Keep an eye on them, my first batch was a bit well done at 20 minutes.

Allow them to cool for a few minutes until you can easily handle them without burning your hands.
Roll each cookie in powdered sugar to coat them completely.
These are a crunchy cookie with a sweet coating but they are not too sweet. As Goldilocks would say, “they are just right!”

A surprisingly tasty cookie that was quite easy to make. Give this recipe a try, it won’t disappoint.
