Christina’s Cream Cheese Fried Wontons

Are you like me?  Do you love those cream cheese wontons that you can order at Chinese restaurants?  There is something so yummy about the crunchy fried wonton shell and the soft hot creamy filling.  I think it’s the contrast of the textures. The fact that they are fried and have a smooth creamy filling might have a little something to do with how delicious they are.   Dipped in sweet and sour sauce, they are so good I could eat a whole plate of them all by myself, but that would be an embarrassment.

So to save myself from the shame of eating an entire order, or two, by myself in public, I make them at home so I can eat as many as I choose.  It is ridiculous how easy they are to make.

You can serve them with your favorite Sweet & Sour sauce, or if you prefer something more savory, you can dip them in Soy sauce.  But if you are lucky enough to live near a Trader Joe’s you can try them with this Sweet, Hot Chili Sauce.  It’s our favorite!

I got this recipe years ago from my dear friend Christina, thus the name, Christina’s Cream Cheese Wontons.  She brought them to a party and I hovered over the plate, trying to be inconspicuous, as I snatched up one after another from the tray on the table.

She was kind enough to share the recipe with me so now I can show you how easy it is to make these little pockets of yumminess!

Theses are always a big hit at our house.

You will need the following ingredients:

  • 1 package square wonton wrappers
  • 8 oz. block of cream cheese, softened
  • 1 package of Imitation Crab, broken up into pieces
  • 1 bunch of green onions, sliced
  • Oil for frying
  • Sweet Hot Chili Sauce, Sweet & Sour Sauce, or Soy Sauce

Using an electric mixer combine the softened cream cheese, crab meat and sliced green onions.

Set up an assembly line by lining a platter with damp paper towels, topping it with another layer of damp paper towels.  You will place each dumpling in between the damp paper towels to keep them from drying out while you are making the rest of them.

Set out a small bowl of water on your work area.

Start by laying out a wonton wrapper.  Place about a teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture in the middle of the wonton wrapper.

Dip your finger in the bowl of water and moisten two of the edges of the wrapper.

Fold wrapper in half to form a triangle.

Press edges together to seal, pressing out any noticeable big pockets of air.

Place a dab of water on the two opposing corners and fold each corner into the middle.  Press together lightly forming a nice little envelope.

Place in between the damp paper towels on your platter while you make the rest of your dumplings, until you have used up all the wrappers and filling.

Heat oil in a large frying pan, oil should be about a ½ inch deep.

Using tongs, fry wontons, a few at a time, in the hot oil until nicely browned, turning ½ way through cooking so they brown evenly on both sides.  This only takes a few minutes, they cook up quickly.

Remove from the oil and drain on dry paper towels.

Serve warm with Sweet Hot Chili sauce, Sweet & Sour sauce or Soy sauce for dipping.

Try to restrain yourself from eating them all by yourself!  It’s harder said than done.  Or just unbutton the top button of your pants and enjoy them with abandon!
