Darlene’s Slow Cooked Kalua Pulled Pork

Raise your hand if you’ve had the privilege of going to a Hawaiian Luau. One of the highlights on the menu is the Kalua Pig that’s slow roasted in a pit dug into the ground. Realistically, not to many of us have a pit in the backyard that we can bury an entire pig and slow roast it all day to feed our families. First digging a pit in the backyard doesn’t sound all that appealing. Honestly if my neighbors saw me digging a pit large enough to bury a pig in the backyard they might be thinking I was up to some nefarious business and probably call the police. Secondly, how is a family of four supposed to eat an entire pig?!?! That’s a whole lotta meat to eat! This slow cooked pork roast is the easy and obvious answer! It’s in a reasonably sized proportion that will feed your family, the flavor is absolutely amazing, and there is no digging a pit in your backyard required either!

How To Make Slow Cooked Kalua Pork:

One of the best things about this recipe, besides the AMAZING taste is how super stinking easy it is to make! When I was invited to a pot luck and tried this Kalua pork I dug a pen out of my purse so I could write down the recipe on a napkin. It’s that good!!!! It only requires four ingredients to make and there is no pit digging in the yard required either. Gotta love that!

After making this the first time, I reduced the amount of salt to 2 tablespoons.

Place pork shoulder in a slow cooker.

Sprinkle with pink Himalayan salt.

Add liquid smoke and pour in the apple juice.

Place lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 7-8 hours or until the meat is tender and shreds easily. Use two forks to shred the meat.

OPTIONAL: Cut buns in half and top with Provolone cheese if desired. Toast in the oven until the cheese is melted, 3-4 minutes.

Place a heap of shredded pork on the bottom half of the buns, add a squeeze of barbecue sauce, and some crispy fried onion strips. Place top half of bun on top.  Serve with a stack of napkins and a side of coleslaw to round out the meal.

Try this easy to make cool and creamy delightfully tangy Creamy Buttermilk Coleslaw with your Sammies. It pairs so well with barbecued ribs, fried chicken or with these Kalua pulled pork sandwiches.

My dear friend Darlene brought this Kalua pulled pork to a potluck and not only did I have seconds, but thirds as well. When I made them at home, not only did my boys scarf down every single slider but they were looking for more buns to make more sandwiches. Don’t let the short list of ingredients make you think these Sammies are lacking in flavor. They pack loads of smoky, robust flavor in each and every bite! If you close your eyes, sit yourself down in front of a fan, you will think you are at a Luau in Hawaii with the warm tropical breezes flowing through your hair with the smell of Kalua pork in the air.
