Breakfast in bed.
Why reserve having breakfast in bed for only Mother’s Day or Father’s Day? Having breakfast in bed feels so decadent, so indulgent, even if it’s only a cup of coffee with a slice of toast.
It takes almost zero effort to set a cup of coffee and a plate with a slice of toast on a tray. Add a cloth napkin with a candle or a small pitcher of flowers and take it to the bedroom instead of the kitchen counter.
You don’t need a fancy bed tray, any tray you have will work. Make your own using scraps of wood leftover from other projects. Glue the wood together, screw a piece of wood along each end; this makes the tray nice and sturdy and helps hold it all together. Paint it in the color of your choice and add handles. I painted mine in a neutral colored chalk paint so it will work with any decor.
You can add legs to your tray if you wish. Lowes and Home Depot both carry different styles that are easy to attach to the base. Just make sure the legs are at least 11 – 12 inches long so the tray will comfortably set above your legs when you are sitting in bed.
It’s nice to have legs on the tray so you don’t have to balance it on your lap when using it in bed. But if you are short on space, the legs will make it more challenging to store it somewhere when you are not using the tray. So you need to decide what works best for you.
Tip: Since the handles are tightened into place from the back, be sure to add the handles to the strips of wood before securing the end pieces of wood to the tray. Drill holes in the end pieces of wood to attach the handles; tighten the screws for the handles from the back side and then attach the wood to either end of your tray, using wood glue and screws.
