Shower curtain hooks are an easily overlooked decor item in the bathroom. Granted they serve a very useful, utilitarian purpose; holding up the shower curtain. Those shower curtain hooks can often be quite plain and boring. Let’s face it, the shower curtain takes up the largest amount of real estate and makes the biggest impact in the bathroom. With a little creativity the insignificant and often overlooked shower curtain hook can give you a big decor bang for a very small investment.
After the abundance of Christmas decorations come down and get packed away, the house has a very empty feel to it, doesn’t it? I am always looking for simple natural touches to add some interest to my home. Nothing fussy, just simple touches that add a little je ne sais quoi; those little nature inspired touches that add a little something distinctive and attractive to the decor in the house.
I came across these shower curtain hooks at a thrift store for only a buck, and I snatched them right up. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them but I knew the flat surface would be perfect for adding an embellishment.
Cheap and sturdy are about the only good things about them. Have you ever seen uglier shower curtain hooks? Does anyone have any idea what those symbols might be? Some sort of Chinese character? A reindeer caricature? A monkey? Well, it doesn’t really matter, it will be covered up with a beautiful embellishment when this project is done.
Supplies:
- shower curtain hooks
- painters tape
- long piece of scrap wood
- spray paint
- hot glue gun and glue sticks
- embellishments of choice, i.e., starfish, seashells, pine cones, acorns, buttons
Use painters tape to attach shower curtain hooks onto a long wooden board.
The tape will protect the parts you don’t want to get paint on and it will hold the hooks upright so you can easily spray paint all the visible sides with one quick coat of paint.
I used Rust-oleum in a semi-gloss finish, in the color Anodized Bronze.
I used leftover spray paint in a neutral color to cover up the hideous mauve color. It’s better to have a have a neutral color showing, in case part of the hook’s surface peeks through the embellishment that will be attached.
Use any neutral color for the base that will work with the color scheme of your home.
Once the paint has dried use a hot glue gun to attach an embellishment.
Starfish are a beautiful coastal inspired embellishment, but you could use almost anything as an embellishment.
Buttons, bows, seashells, acorns, pinecones. Any small items could be used. And they don’t all have to match either. Mixing it up will give you a more eclectic look. Do you have a stash of vintage rhinestone pins or clip on earrings you inherited from your grandmother? What a lovely way to display them instead of hidden away in a drawer.
What about using hot wheels as a fun whimsical embellishment in a kids bathroom? Jingle bells for a fun holiday embellishment? Old Christmas ornaments you no longer use on the tree? You are only limited by your imagination.
So how did you embellish your shower curtain hooks? I would love to see what you created for your home!!!
