I have an easy, inexpensive craft project to share with you today. Do you have a bin of brightly colored plastic Easter eggs like this?
I almost tossed out these plastic eggs now that my kids are grown. I no longer hide candy filled eggs for Easter egg hunts. Instead of tossing them out I decided to recycle and update them and use them in my decor.
First order of business was to tone down the colors. I came up with two simple DIYs that you can easily do in an afternoon. And the best part? You probably have all the supplies you need to make them so this project could end up being free! No trip to the craft store required! Plus those old plastic eggs aren’t going to end up in the landfill. That’s a win-win in my book!
Supplies needed:
- Assorted plastic eggs
- White glue or Mod Podge
- Paint brush
- Old book
- Hot glue gun & glue sticks
- Twine
- Assorted bits of ribbon and lace
- Scissors
- Raffia or shredded Easter grass
The first look is to cover the egg with pieces of print from an old book.
Rip out pages from an old book and tear each page into small pieces.
Using white glue or Mod Podge, coat the surface of the egg and press the ripped bits of paper onto the surface completely covering the egg. Coat with a layer of glue to seal. Think paper mâché from school projects. It’s the same process.
Place eggs on parchment paper and allow glue to dry completely.
The second covering is to hot glue twine onto each egg to cover them.
Start at one end and glue twine in place, going in a circular pattern until the entire egg is covered with the twine.
Learn all about how to upcycle silver pieces that you may think are past their prime. A little elbow grease will get it sparkling!
Add bits of ribbon or lace to your eggs if desired, and secure in place with a dab of hot glue.
Nestle eggs in a pretty dish filled with raffia or natural colored shredded paper strips to create a pretty nest for your eggs.
Displaying your eggs in simple egg cup holders is another lovely way to showcase them.
This was such a fun, easy craft project to do on a rainy afternoon! No special skills required, anyone can easily do this! I love the transformation from garish neon plastic to these lovely neutral, textured, beautiful eggs.
Let me know if you decide to transform some of those old plastic Easter eggs instead of throwing them out.
How cute! These are great ideas for decorating eggs! Thank you for sharing!
And no special supplies needed! Perfect for all of us stuck at home!
