Learn How To Make An All Natural Organic Lemon Cleaner

This time when my dear sister in law gifted me with yet another lovely big bag of lemons, I was ready to make something really fabulous with them. An extremely easy to make, all natural, organic, great smelling cleaner.

I’ve been making my sweet mother in law Marie’s Best Homemade Lemonade all summer long. It’s utterly refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness and tartness. It’s not too sweet and not too tart, it’s just right and it really hits the spot on a hot summer day! We get lots of hot summer days here in my neck of the woods!!!

Delicious!

But it just kills me to toss out all those lemon skins. Yes many find their way into the garbage disposal to keep it smelling fresh but how may lemon peels can you realistically grind up? I have to confess, the majority of those lemon skins end up in the trash. Such a waste! I kept thinking there must be something they could be used for.

Lemons always start out life in my kitchen as decor before I use them for cooking.

I stumbled upon this idea online for making a lemon cleaner with lemon skins. When I saw it I knew I had to give it a try. I removed most of the zest to make Limoncello. Then I squeezed out the juice to make Marie’s Best Homemade Lemonade. I used the leftover skins what typically end up in the trash to make this all natural lemon cleaner.

Make Limoncello, lemonade and lemon cleaner to use up every part of the lemon.

Think about how much we spend on toxic cleaners that aren’t good for us. This all natural cleaner smells lemony fresh and works beautifully to clean many of the surfaces in your home. It uses just three ingredients, lemon skins, white vinegar and water. Plus it costs just pennies a bottle to make.

Here’s how easy it is to make it. Place lemon skins into plastic containers. Pack in as many as you can.

TIP: Use plastic containers to make this cleaner rather than glass jars with metal lids. The acidity in the mixture is corrosive and will react with the metal rings of the glass jars.

I cut each lemon into quarters and shoved in as many as would fit into each plastic container.

Pour enough vinegar into each container to completely submerge the lemon chunks in the vinegar.

I added some lemon skins with the zest and used some without.

Seal the containers and place them in a cool dark spot for 3-4 weeks. I stored them in my pantry and agitated the containers a few times. No set schedule, when you see them or when you think about it, just shake up those containers a little. Even if you completely forget to agitate them, it’s fine, it will still produce a usable lemony liquid.

This cleaner uses what normally ends up in the trash.

After 2-3 weeks have passed it’s going to look pretty gross. Don’t worry, that’s how it’s supposed to look.

Strain the lemon/vinegar liquid from the lemon chunks.

Look at how lemony yellow and beautiful it is! And it smells amazingly lemony fresh!

I lined my stainer with paper towels to do this. You could also use coffee filters or a cheese cloth, use whatever you already happen to have on hand.

Once you have squeezed out the juice, discard the lemon skins. They have given you the last bit of their lemony goodness.

Decant the strained lemon vinegar liquid into spray bottles. Add water to fill your spray bottle. Shake to combine and it’s ready to be used.

TIP: The Dollar Store is a great place to pick up inexpensive spray bottles. Just be sure to label them so you remember what’s in the bottle.

I love using this all natural, organic cleaner in my home. It’s easy to make, works great, costs just a few pennies a bottle, and leaves the whole house smelling fresh and clean with no harsh chemicals that could harm your family!
