Spring Wreath DIY

We have been blessed with sunny days in the 70’s here in northern California. While the calendar tells me that it is still officially winter it feels more like spring has arrived. Trees are blooming and the warm sunny days are drawing me outdoors more and more everyday.

I’m feeling the itch to start adding spring touches to my decor so I decided to start at my front entry with a spring inspired wreath. Today I want to share with you how to make this simple spring themed wreath. It’s like a breath of fresh spring air. Light and airy with lots of greenery. It’s a fun, easy project you can easily make in just an afternoon. No special skills required, I promise!

Just like the bright green grasses covering the hillsides, this wreath says “Hello” spring!

You only need a few basic supplies to create this wreath. I purchased a grapevine wreath, 3 floral picks, and a spool of ribbon for under $20. Take advantage of sales and use those 40% off coupons.

Supplies needed:

  • 18 inch grapevine wreath
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • Floral wire & wire cutter
  • 2 Boston fern greenery picks
  • Assorted leafy greenery picks
  • 5 yards wired ribbon
  • Scissors

The first step is to create the bow for the wreath. Make 6, 8 inch long loops with the wired ribbon, leaving long tails.

I’m mad about plaid! I love using it all year round; not just for the holidays.

Attach the bow to the grapevine wreath, securing it to the wreath using floral wire.

For best results, use a 2 inch wide, wired ribbon in your choice of pattern.

Next prepare the greenery.

Separate Boston fern picks and other greenery into individual separate fronds.

Pull picks apart so you have individual fronds to work with.

Do the same with the other greenery picks. You want individual fronds or strands to work with instead of bunches of greenery. We are going for a light airy wreath, nothing dense and heavy. You will not be able to obtain a light airy look if you use clumps of greenery instead of individual stems.

Place individual fronds of greenery on the wreath splaying outward from both sides of the bow. Place the fronds in the direction of the wreath, but you don’t want to place everything straight up and down.

I started with the vines but then decided to use the fern fronds as the base, tucking in the airy, leafy fronds at the end to fill in any bare spots.

While you are putting your wreath together keep this in mind: turn pieces sideways or even upside down; have some pieces coming forward as well. Your aim is to create a three dimensional, kinda messy, airy, unkempt looking wreath. Because we are going for a kinda messy, loose, unkempt look, there really is no wrong way to do this! Just take your time and play around with it until you have an arrangement that you find pleasing.

Once you are happy with the arrangement; hot glue each individual greenery frond into place to secure.

I recommend using a wired ribbon for this project. Shape the tails of the ribbon to lay a certain way. Once you have it the way you like it, attach the tails where they naturally meet the wreath with a dab of hot glue to keep them exactly where you want them to stay.

See how some of the fronds are sticking up and down? Some are coming out of the center of the bow towards you, and some are sideways and at different angles? This creates a 3 dimensional wreath that you will love much more than a wreath with all the fronds laying flat against the grape vine wreath base.

I hung my wreath in my entry hall niche where it will greet visitors all season long.

Hang wreath and enjoy your creation all season long.

Do you have a niche in your home? This wreath would be the perfect spring accent for it. If you are not sure how to decorate a niche, go check out the post I wrote on how to enhance and create a beautiful focal point out of this often challenging spot in your home.

See, I told you this was an easy project, no special tools, supplies or talent needed. Just an afternoon of your time, a little fun, and some creativity is all that’s needed.

I am so pleased with how nicely this wreath turned out and how easy it was to create. Let me know if you give this easy spring craft project a try and how your wreath turns out. I would love to see what you create!
