No matter what color scheme you choose, incorporating these three elements will take your table from ho-hum to fabulous. You don’t have to run out to the store and purchase all new dishes, napkins and decor items to set a beautiful table for Thanksgiving. In fact, I bet you probably have almost everything you need to set a beautiful table. I encourage you to shop your house and use what you already have at home this year for Thanksgiving.
Today I want to provide some inspiration by sharing what I did to set my Thanksgiving table this year. I did not spend a cent on this years decor, instead I challenged myself to use what I already had on hand and to repurpose items in new ways. I challenge you to do the same this year.
When you get ready to set your table this year, keep these three elements in mind:
- Color Pallet
- Texture
- Layering
These three elements will add interest and dimension to your table and give it an elegant, puled together, designer look. Let me show you what I mean.
Start by clearing off your table. Give it a good wipe down.
Start with a table cloth for your foundation. It will set the color pallet and provide a foundation to build upon. I didn’t have one large enough to cover the entire table so I turned a smaller one on the diagonal. I love using plaid in my decor, it adds loads of color possibilities and instantly creates a holiday vibe.
Next I layered on a burlap table runner. Not only did it add another layer to the table, but it’s nubby weave added a bit of texture as well.
This burlap table runner is usually on my dining room table and I am reusing it on my holiday table. Get creative and use what you already have in your home. Train your eye to look at items you already have in different ways. The beauty of using neutral items in your home is that it’s so easy to mix and match items and reuse them in dozens of different ways. You are only limited by your imagination.
Next I added round water hyacinth placemats at each setting. These are my everyday placemats, but they added interest to the table. Again their neutral color works with everything and they add yet another later of texture to the table.
I’m using my everyday green ceramic dinner plates on the table as well. Their color works great with a fall color scheme. Plus, I didn’t need to go out and purchase new dinnerware, they are durable so they can go into the dishwasher after we eat. No hand washing needed. That’s a quadruple home run in my book!
I added in our family’s heirloom silver water goblets for some shimmer and a touch of sophistication and elegance. They elevate the everyday ceramic dinner plates and make each table setting just a bit more elegant. Combining inexpensive items with elegant items elevates the entire look on your table. I love the juxtaposition of mixing simple everyday items with more elegant sophisticated items. It’s unexpected and creates interest on your table.
Instead of using the matching plaid napkins that came with my tablecloth I chose to use solid yellow napkins I had in my linen closet instead. Their color works beautifully with the placemats and burlap table runner and keeps the table settings from being too matchy-matchy.
I added a simple wood napkin ring adorned with an acorn for a lovely, simple autumn touch. Learn how easy it is to make these acorn adorned napkin rings for your Thanksgiving table.
Next comes the fun part, all the extra little touches that will make your holiday table special. If you have a chandelier above your table, think about how you can incorporate some color and texture. If you can add some texture, like leaves or berry picks it will draw the eye upward and add more interest to the entire room.
Incorporate candlelight to your table for instant ambience. I used these Burgundy hurricane lanterns along the center of the table. I typically use them at Christmas but their burgundy color works beautifully with the fall colors in the plaid tablecloth on this autumn table.
Adding a tray to contain a few berry picks, leaves and a turkey makes a lovely centerpiece for the table. Keep the centerpiece low so your guests can see each other across the table.
Add a few more candles and sprinkle a few acorns on the table and you have a lovely autumn inspired Thanksgiving table that will make the holiday feel extra special.
It really is very simple to set a beautiful designer table for Thanksgiving and you don’t have to purchase any new items to do it either. Shop your house and use what you already have. Look at items and think about different ways you can use them.
The same elements, color pallet, texture, and layering can be used to create a festive Christmas table too.
Let your imagination help you create a unique, beautiful Thanksgiving table. Have fun with this and you will be amazed at how beautiful your table can look this year for the holidays.
Be sure to set aside a little time to stop and reflect on all the blessings in your life this year. It’s so easy to get caught up in thinking about all the things we don’t have. Instead focus on all the blessings that God has given you.
I want to wish you and your family a blessed holiday and I pray that 2021 will be filled with many opportunities and blessings for you and your family and friends.
May God protect each and every one of you and keep you in his loving care.
Happy Thanksgiving my friends!!!
