What I love about this recipe:

  • I love that this recipe makes two pounds of meat versus just one pound. That means I can cook once and get a couple more meals out of the leftovers. Anything that saves me time in the kitchen on a busy weeknight is a definite plus in my book!
  • I love that it’s super easy to make and takes no more time to cook up than the basic ground beef taco meat I’ve been making for years.
  • I love that this recipe produces a punch of flavor that really elevates any Mexican meal I serve up. Whether it’s nachos, enchiladas, burritos or a taco salad this ground beef makes everything I add it to all that much more flavorful.
  • I love that it’s an economical meal and no-one ever complains when these tacos are served up for dinner, or nachos the following night, or burritos.

So what makes these tacos so stinking good you ask? It’s the addition of this one simple ingredient you’ve probably seen at the store next to the fresh avocados. Yep it’s a package of Guacamole seasoning mix and will only set you back about a buck for the envelope. You can get either the mild or the spicy variety. My family likes a little kick of heat so I use the spicy version, but the mild version is equally delicious. It adds a little something, something to the flavor of the meat that will have you coming back for more.

How To Make The Best Ground Beef Taco Meat:

Gather together the ingredients. There’s just a few.

Start like you always do, by browning the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it up into small crumbles with a wooden spoon until it’s browned and cooked through.

I love my large cast iron skillet to cook up ground beef. It heats the meat evenly and it’s large enough to hold all two pounds of ground beef. If you’ve been thinking about purchasing a cast iron skillet, go with this Lodge 12-inch Cast Iron Skillet. Ever since I purchased mine, it’s the skillet I pull out of the cupboard more than any other skillet I own. It’s made in America, it heats evenly, you’ll have no hot spots that will burn foods, once seasoned it has a non-stick surface, and it will literally last you a lifetime! Every good cook should have cast iron cookware in their kitchen arsenal. Click here to Learn how to properly care for it so it lasts you a lifetime. It may be the last cookware you will ever have to buy.

Once the beef is browned and cooked through, drain off any excess grease.

TIP: Instead of pouring grease down the drain, which you should never do! Tip the pan and use paper towels to soak up the excess grease that collects on the side of the pan.

Next add the taco seasoning mix, the envelope of guacamole seasoning, salt and pepper to the beef in the skillet.

Pour in water and stir to combine.

Bring mixture to a low simmer and cook, stirring often, until the water has cooked off and mixture thickens.

NOTE:  Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator.  Place cooked, cooled beef in a large ziplock bag and squeeze out any excess air.  Pop it in the freezer for longer storage.

Serve cooked seasoned ground beef in all your favorite Mexican dishes; tacos, enchiladas, nachos, burritos, taco salad.
