Cooking 101: How To Cut Up A Fresh Pineapple

One of my all time favorite fruits are Pineapples. When we were on vacation in Maui we polished off an entire Pineapple just about every single day we were there. When they are ripe they are like nectar from the island Gods! Naturally sweet and juicy and oh so utterly delectable!

When there are ripe, fresh pineapples at the market, do you walk away? Does the idea of cutting up a Pineapple seem a little intimidating? Don’t be overwhelmed! I know it’s hard to figure out where to start. Keep reading to find out how easy it actually is!

For the sweetest Pineapples, look for one’s that are yellow and not completely green.

No, you do not need another fancy kitchen gadget to cut up a Pineapple. Why spend the money and have it use up valuable kitchen drawer space when you will only use it occasionally? All you need is a sharp kitchen knife, a cutting board, and about 5 minutes of your time.

I know there is a lot of waste. Sadly a large part of a Pineapple is completely inedible. Kind of like artichokes; a large part is inedible. But the parts that are edible? Delicious!!!

Start by laying the pineapple on its side. Use a sharp knife to cut about a 1/2 inch off the top along with all the leaves.

Spin it around and cut off about a 1/2 inch from the bottom of the pineapple.

Stand up the pineapple on one of the cut sides. Take your knife and slice off thin layers of the bumpy outer skin.

Cut away just enough of the skin to remove the tough bristles and skin. The bristles are inedible, prickly and not tasty at all. You could use a spoon to pick them out if you want but I find it quicker and easier to just cut them off with the knife when I’m cutting off the skin.

Rotate the Pineapple and continue to remove the skin in thin strips until you get all the way around the entire Pineapple.

Yes there is a lot of waste but that’s just how Pineapples are.

Once you have removed the skin, cut the Pineapple in half, vertically, down through the center core.

Cut each half in half vertically again so you end up with 4 quarters.

Each quarter will have a tough woody core in the center. You want to remove this.

Stand each quarter up on your cutting board and cut off the center core on each quarter.

The core is woody and not tasty.

The core is tough and not sweet or soft like the tender flesh of the Pineapple.

What you are finally left with is the sweet delectable edible part of the Pineapple! Cut the remaining flesh in half and then into bites sized chunks.

That’s all there is to it! With a little practice, it shouldn’t take you more than just a few minutes to cut up an entire pineapple. It takes me less than 5 minutes to cut up a fresh Pineapple. Now that you know how quick and easy it is to cut up a Pineapple you will never buy the canned stuff again. Nothing compares to a fresh, sweet, juicy Pineapple!!!

Pop those chunks in the fridge and serve them ice cold. I love to make a simple summer fruit salad and add either fresh raspberries or strawberries. Oh so very good! Not only is it sweet and delicious, but it’s full of good for you fiber and nutrients your body craves!

Who needs a sugary dessert when you have this naturally sweet treat from Mother Nature to enjoy?
