I finally had to find out if all the hype about beer can chicken was really as good as everyone says it is. I’ve roasted whole birds plenty of times in the past with very good results. Does shoving a can of beer up a chickens hind quarters really make a difference?
Well I decided it was high time to find out once and for all. Keep reading to find out how easy it is to roast a chicken like this and if all the hype is warranted.
You can either grill the chicken on a gas barbecue grill or in your oven. If you decide to do this in the oven, be sure to place a pan underneath the chicken so if any juices run over they end up in the pan instead of all over the bottom of your oven. You’re welcome, you can thank me later.
I opted to cook the chicken out on the grill. Start by preheating barbecue grill or oven to 350°.
In a small bowl, combine Kosher salt, brown sugar, pepper, paprika and garlic powder.
Remove gizzards from the chicken cavity and discard.
Wash chicken under cold water and pat dry.
Using your fingers, pluck off any pin feathers that may still be on the bird.
Rub the entire chicken with olive oil.
Sprinkle the spice mixture onto the bird. Use your hands to rub the spices onto the bird so that the entire bird is covered.
While I was doing my research on the best beer can chicken recipes I noticed that many folks just shove that can of beer into the chicken and pop it on the grill.
I elected to purchase this stand to ensure the chicken didn’t fall over while it cooked. Plus the pan at the bottom catches most of the drippings, keeping the mess off the bottom of your oven or grill.
Open a can of beer and take a few sips. Place opened can of beer in the center of the chicken roaster.
Slide chicken onto the roaster over the can of beer.
Place chicken on the barbecue and close lid. Or place chicken in preheated oven.
Cook chicken over indirect heat for 1 hour 45 minutes or until juices run clear.
Remove the cooked chicken along with the stand from the barbecue. Be careful, the pan will be full of juices so don’t burn yourself!
Let chicken rest for 10-15 minutes before removing it from the roaster stand and carving.
So what’s the verdict? Roasting a beer can chicken takes about the same amount of time as the traditional method of roasting a bird. The prep is quick and easy as well. The result? An extremely juicy and tender bird! Even the breast meat was juicy and flavorful! I can highly recommend this method for cooking a bird!!!
